What I love about tutoring is helping students have fun while learning. I help take the fear out of learning a subject.
I really like the ages of K-6 grade as all of my expeience has been with this age group. I like to do assessments at first to see what level the students are on. My goal is to always have a fun activity to do with them after we do our homework.
I carry a bag with me...like a grab bag of items. These items are treats, word games, candy or pencils. My kids love doing the grab bag at the end of the tutoring session.
I have two years experience in TESOL and ELL Tutoring. This is working with hispanic students and coaching them for the OTELA test each February. I also have 5 years experience as a substitute teacher. Before teaching I was a marketing assistant at a bank for 10 years.
I am a former president of a Toastmasters Club, a club that teaches public speaking and leadership skills.
My students know me as Mrs. B! I am fun loving, out going and very creative. I teach to the child, not to the subject. Everyone is different and everyone learns at different speeds. I keep my sessions FUN! I have a son in the 9th grade. He is in high school and loves being active in boy scouts, baseball and student council. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I do a lot of reading of books and showing pictures to grades K-2 and I also stress the importance to children to learn how to love to read. Example: I bring a bag of library books with me for them to pick and choose from...they love that! I check out a good assortment of subjects they like and subjects they should read to open their horizons.
I have been an ESL tutor for 2 years from 2013-15 for grades K-6 at a public school. I have some students with various learning disabilities and some are gifted.
I am qualified because I am a 12 year member of Toastmasters International...as a member, club president for 4 years and have entered speech contests. I have also taught businesss and public speaking in high school.
