About Shalini

Hello

My name is Shalini, a passionate science teacher by profession. I have tutored after school program in the area of reading and math for many schools.I have worn multiple hats or “roles” when instructing individual or small group of students. Knowing when to wear the right hat influences learning experiences. Three instructor/tutor roles that I have already identified are of “being yourself , being role model and being the expert in the subject area” to be taught during classroom or tutoring session.

Tutoring Style:

1. Taskmaster: Sets clear teaching/tutoring goal and student expectation for completing the set goal. This certainly help students who want to prepare for state level or college entrance exams. Lessons are specifically identified to meet state standard and little deviation occurs within the lesson.

2. Salesperson: Stresses the importance of all program information. Every detail is important and is useful to the students, if not now, then later on. The lessons are taught from the perspective that if it is in the curriculum, it must be taught.

3. Cheerleader: Sells the personality and friendship of the instructor to the students. The instructor encourages and provides only positive reinforcement to students.

Qualifications / Education:

- B.S In Chemistry and Biology – Bangalore University India
- B.A. Liberal Arts – Xavier University
- Graduate credit courses in teaching science and math Literacy.

Personal details:

- Married
- Healthy and balance minded

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is basis for Chemistry and Physics subject mastery. My education background and my interest in teaching this fundamental math requirement has inspired me in several ways in going above and beyond the needs of a student. I have tutored middle school math and algebra 1 for many years and I have inspired them to excel in reaching academic goal. My lessons will be supplemental to your student classwork or enrichment for a advanced student. Problem solving using real world example will be part of my academic coaching or training in addition to routine drill worksheets. Try it and see it would work for you too!

Algebra 2

Student’s proficiency level in manipulating algebraic equation are tested and assessed while solving a problem. My approach is to re-teach the missed concepts earlier grades if necessary while helping student current algebra 2 homework assignment. I allow students to continue working a homework problem the way they understood first to reveal more about their knowledge rather than showing how to solve first. This approach allows student correct their mistakes by knowing what needs to be done in order to get the correct solution. This method is direct in contrast to diagnostic remedial model where tutor takes in charge of teaching a student. However the important consideration is how to develop an effective method for a student to correct the misconception in guiding student to do so. Tutoring style is personalized for each I approach to improve their cognitive skills.

Biology

Biology and Chemistry go hand in hand! I have majored in these subjects, worked in academic and industrial setting for many years and taught several years as a substitute teacher. I am comfortable with Biology for freshmen, advanced or honors class or AP Biology and able to modify a lesson accordingly. I have met highly qualified teacher status in taking advanced course work to meet state certification requirement to teach the subject to high school students. Give it a try!

Chemistry

I have majored in chemistry, worked as a chemist in a industrial setting for many years. My strong background in technical field combined with teaching hands on science during summer workshop brougt to me field of teaching chemistry, developing online high school curriculum as a academic enrichment specialist. I have taught high school chemistry, Physics, Biology and Earth science as a substitute teacher for area schools. I can be of assistance to students who likes to sharpen scientific reasoning and math skills to take technical degree path for a college major.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified to teach reading and math for elementary grade students. I could use whole language approach or phonics based instruction depending on comfortable level of student learning style. Math at elementary level could be combination of both hands on or drill based and adjusted accordingly.

Students are assessed initially using standard criteria for student understanding of the concept If parents have already done that in your child's school, please provide classroom teacher feedback to me such that I can develop enrichment lessons for that unit.

Geometry

A student approaching a geometry course with difficulty basically needs to develop a good visual cue, a descriptive/analytical method for proof, and memorization skills for remembering formulas and their application to problem in general. My tutoring method is inclusive of these skills' development while solving a problem for homework help. Computer-aided manipulatives would help in initial stage of learning geometrical figures, theorems and proofs. As tutoring progresses, students are allowed to work hand-on by constructing models and solving more real life examples involving geometry word problems. Drawing, sketching and more verbal descriptive analysis is encouraged. Study skills in memorization of theorems and formula are also being tutored.

Physics

Physics is natural inclination for inquiry based hands on minds on activities to inspire students at middle school level. My passion for teaching this inquiry based after school lead me to pursue education degree further to teach Chemistry and Physics for high school students as well. I have developed online curriculum for teaching conceptual physics on earlier years and can relate the math base concepts to technology and science.

Reading

Taken graduate-level courses for reading across the curriculum for professional development credit in the past. My Liberal Art degree in science and math education as part of teacher training practicum helped to gain the insight of practical experience in teaching reading in particular for elementary grades.
