In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As an elementary school teacher I was responsible for teaching all general subjects to elementary grade level students. I also facilitated an after-school tutoring program for students in grades 1-2.
As an elementary school teacher I taught phonics on a regular basis. Working with students in small groups as well as large, my focus was on mastery of consonants, blend, and vowel sounds.
