As a professional chemist, I can state with certainty that chemistry serves a paramount purpose in today's society. Everything from pharmaceuticals to crime forensics depends upon people with a thorough understanding of matter and the changes it undergoes. Additionally, there are many other occupational areas that benefit from the skill sets that are created by learning chemistry. Therefore, even if a career in chemistry does not appeal to a student, he or she can rest assured that the thought process generated by the successful completion of a chemistry course will lend itself effectively to another career path, be it medicine, engineering, business, or nursing, to name a few.
Teaching chemistry requires more than just a good understanding of the subject. Concepts need to be made clear through repetition and numerous examples of potential exam questions. As a Teaching Assistant in graduate school, it was critical that I recognize the fact that most of the students did NOT share my passion for organic chemistry. My goal was to not to instill that passion in them, but rather to use my passion to make clear some relatively complex scientific principles. I received a Teaching Excellence Award for laboratory class instruction and was happy to see that students, most of whom were pre-med, continued to show up at the optional recitation classes that I taught to support the lecture material. Let's face it, exams are where it all counts, and I've prided myself on being able to predict problems that are likely to show up on exams and make students comfortable with solving them. As a professional chemist, I can state with certainty that chemistry serves a paramount purpose in today's society. My son is a high school student taking classes at Tri-C. He took a Bio-Chemistry class and was struggling. My son said John was a great help. He said that John's explanations were easy to follow. My son ended up asking John for tutoring help 3 times during the class and each time John was able to quickly teach him the material so he felt comfortable to complete his assignments. I would recommend John because of his skill at teaching.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I earned a Ph.D. in Synthetic Organic Chemistry.
I have published in world renowned scientific journals including Tetrahedron Letters, The Journal of Organic Chemistry, and The Journal of the American Chemical Society.
I received a Teaching Excellence Award in graduate school.
I have worked in the pharmaceutical industry for over fifteen years which requires a thorough understanding and application of organic chemistry.
