About Sharon

Because I have had experience teaching ESL for over 23 years, I know what newcomers struggle with while trying to adapt to living in the USA. I am able to give you the vocabulary words and daily experiences you will need to live in a new country. We will talk about American customs, shopping, cooking, medical information or whatever you find you need.

I am willing to teach individuals or a group of students at the same time. Fees will be based on the number of people per group and how far I will travel to provide this teaching service.

I am not a remedial teacher but can help with language lessons for conversational English and basics of reading and writing.

Pre-K (4-6 year-old) students are encouraged to have classes in English to get a good start when enrolling in American schools.

I have taught from Kindergarten to adult level and will work with you to improve your English Language Proficiency.

I am humbled by such an encouraging commentary on my tutoring skills. Thank you, Rachel. I am passionate about teaching English as a Second Language. This student is a prime example of someone living in the United States for quite a few years and needing professional support to refine her English skills. She is an eager and fun student to teach. We have some good laughs. I look forward to meeting with her. I feel we will have a life- long friendship.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have been an Evangelical Christian since 1974 and have taught informal Bible Studies in small group format. I have taken Precepts, Community Bible studies and Stonecroft Studies. My love for Christ and His Word is motivation to teach others what the Bible offers to live their daily lives.

Cooking

My college minor was Home Ec. I grew up in a household of 8 children and took over the responsibilities of cooking at age 19 when my mother passed away. I have raised my own children in my 43 years of marriage and cooked everything from scratch. I turn out a pretty tasty menu, if I do say so myself! I have a lot of experience with entertaining and can throw a party together with no effort.

Elementary (K-6th)

My college degree is a Bachelors in Elementary Education. My 36 hours post grad are in language arts-reading, writing, ESL and using technology in the classroom. My classroom experience covers K-8. My strong subjects are language arts and ESL administration and teaching. I started teaching elementary education in 1969, administrated and taught Safety Town and VBS while raising my children. I have taught ESL since 1989 and have developed district wide ESL programs.

English

I have been teaching English as A Second Language for 20 years to students ranging in age from Kindergarten through adults. The adults are newcomers to the USA looking to increase their speaking and writing skills for daily interaction.

I have taught elementary reading, phonics, spelling and have a strong vocabulary background.

I live 15 minutes from Solon.

ESL/ESOL

Because I have had experience teaching ESL for over 23 years, I know what newcomers struggle with while trying to adapt to living in the USA. I am able to give you the vocabulary words and daily experiences you will need to live in a new country. We will talk about American customs, shopping, cooking, medical information or whatever you find you need.

I am willing to teach individuals or a group of students at the same time. Fees will be based on the number of people per group and how far I will travel to provide this teaching service.

I am not a remedial teacher but can help with language lessons for conversational English and basics of reading and writing.

Handwriting

Knowing manuscript and cursive writing is important despite the lack of teaching it in schools today. I have taught K through grade 4 students the correct strokes for forming letters. I still get complemented on my nice handwriting. It's"teacher handwriting! " My college degree is a Bachelors in Elementary Education. My 36 hours post grad are in language arts-reading, writing, ESL and using technology in the classroom.

Phonics

As a child I was taught reading through the phonics method. As a teacher, I taught phonics and have seen successful readers through that process. Generally my spelling is 99% successful because the phonics method is ingrained in me.

Reading

I have taught ESL to students for 25 years and am discerning in recognizing reading issues they may have. I taught phonics, and grades 1-4 classroom reading. My students have ranged from K-adult. There are many helps to teaching reading that I tap into. I qualified on WyzAnt for reading and have take many post grad classes in Language Arts. I try to make reading enjoyable. I suggest to parents to READ, READ, READ with your children.
