I taught K-4 for three years and substituted for 3 years for elementary teachers. I love working with children because children are happy and energetic and they do not hide their feelings when they finally understand what you are teaching! The experience of teaching a child to read is so exciting because reading is the beginning of learning, understanding and changing.
In the last few years I have been a paraprofessional. I know and understand that special needs kids have their own personalities, talents, and needs. In teaching special needs children you have to take the time to understand them as an individual, let them take time to know you, find the best way to teach them, be consistent and never give up! Special needs children are amazing and have much to offer this world.
As a k-4 teacher I have found the best way to teach reading is with a combination of phonics and whole word. I believe you should always teach phonics but it is wise to use whole word because some children need that spark of interest and excitement of reading to get them started. Patience and trying different venues must be used to help each child's unique way of learning.
Substituting for paraprofessionals has given me an insight to the do's and don'ts for a wide range of special needs children. I believe you must treat special needs children with respect and with the attitude that they can have individual goals that can be reached. I do not believe in the attitude that they can only learn so much. Each child is different with different abilities and talents it just take patience, trial and error, and the consistency of being there for them.
I am flexible and will work where it is best for the child. I also have respect for each parents rules for their child and will adhere to the conditions of each family. I have four children of my own three are in college and one is a junior in High School. I tell you this to let you know that i understand how every child is different and have unique ways of learning even within the same family. Please try me as your child's tutor! I would love to help your child learn. I taught K-4 for three years and substituted for 3 years for elementary teachers. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
