About Nancy

I am a recently retired elementary teacher with over thirty years experience. I have my BS in elementary education from the University of Cincinnati, as well as my Master's in Education through Wright State University. I have taught special education, as well as fourth and second grade. Throughout my career, I have also subbed at all levels, as well as tutored at all levels, including special needs. I am willing to work with you in terms of schedule and price.

As a tutor, I utilize assessments that are both informal,as well as formal. For example, if reading seems to be a problem, I may listen to the child read to become aware of the type of problem that the child may be having, as well as the best approach to remediation. These problems may involve comprehension, use of context clues, or perhaps word decoding. I also administer reading checklists to assess these types of skills, as well as to determine comfortable reading level. I use materials that are fun, engaging and up to date within my sessions based upon individual student needs. I often use current childrens' book lists from the library, making choices based upon interest, as well as coinciding with current reading level. I also get to know the child's learning style to find out the type of learner that he/she may be: visual, auditory, hands-on or perhaps a combination of modalities.

I feel that my approach to tutoring leads to successful learning!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

As a certified 1-8 teacher, having earned my Master's degree in Teacher Leadership, as well as subbing at all levels, I feel that I have worked with countless children labeled ADD, as well as ADHD. Not only did I have these students within my elementary classroom throughout my teaching career, I also taught special needs students as a unit.

Autism

As an educator, I have been trained to work with students identified with autism disorder. I have been trained to teach grade level curriculum incorporating modifications on an as needed basis. For example, as with all students, but particularly this population, I have learned the importance of maintaining the following within the educational setting: routine, understandable expectations, reduction of visual and auditory stimuli, positive reinforcement for correct behavior and handling behavioral problems on an individual basis(example: separation, or involvement in an activity of enjoyment). I have also learned to modify the students' work using visual and auditory clues, according to individual needs, as well as integration of sensory diets where students become involved in movement and exercise in order to transition into the next learning activity.

Dyslexia

I have had special education certification, and have been trained in strategies to help students focus and learn to meet with successful outcomes utilizing behavior modifications. I also have training on how to modify work to help children learn to read using the following: Orton Gillingham, whole language approaches to help children succeed in phonics, as well as reading comprehension: finding main idea and details, as well as reading fluently, identifying story sequence, as well as cause and effect relationships.

Elementary (K-6th)

As an elementary teacher, I have taught language arts, reading, mathematics, science and social studies. I am very aware of current curriculum and special needs, as well as current trends in education, after teaching and tutoring for over thirty years.

I have also been trained in such programs as Phonics k-12, as well as the Orton Gillingham approach.

Prealgebra

I have experience in tutoring students within this subject area.

Reading

As a certified elementary teacher, I have been trained to help children improve reading skills according to their individual need and learning style. For example, some children need help in sight word recognition, while others may need help in reading comprehension, word attack skills, or fluency. I enjoy helping children to develop a natural love of reading.

Social Studies

As a teacher/tutor of thirty four years, I have taught social studies involving various topics and methods, I have taught community, government, cultures, history, map skills, and government. I am currently certified to teach grades 1-8 within this subject area.

Study Skills

I have taught for thirty three years, as well as tutoring in-between. The study skills that I incorporate into my lessons include, teaching correct usage of the dictionary, as well as the thesaurus, reading for test prep(pre-reading questions), as well as the highlighting of information within the text. I am also training students to look for relationships within their reading, such as relating text to text, or perhaps text to self, as well as text to world issues. In the area of mathematics, I use warm-up and test prep problems as deemed necessary.I have also taught OG prep, as well as GE, Act and Stanford and Oyis Lennon practice tests.

Writing

I have had experience teaching writing techniques for the past thirty three years.

Nancy G is always willing to help and is a positive tutor.

I like how Nancy asks my student questions about the vocabulary he reads. I noticed she also encourages him to read in a louder tone. She was reading today out loud and told him to notice how loud she sounds when she reads and asked him to do the same. She is always encouraging him to do his best and shows interest in his progress. She is an asset to his learning and I would recommend her to other
