About Nicole

I love the French language and have been involved in French for most of my life, and certainly all of my adult life. I have lived, worked, and taken classes in France for a total of 14 months divided over two separate occasions. I have taught in a French Middle School and High School with 9 different teachers and took on students on the side for tutoring. I taught English but have also tutored French in the United States. I can handle many different French levels and ages because I have experience with anyone from beginners in language learning to experienced speakers!

I am also a lifelong lover of history. My major at university was in International Studies, which I heavily supplemented with history around the world. I am passionate about history and what it can teach us, and am extremely enthusiastic to share this love! My friends and students have loved my easy-to-understand explanations and demonstration of the significance of events and trends.

I love explaining something and watching the lightbulb go off. I love watching my students gain confidence and ease in a new language. I love sharing a language that I am passionate about with new people, and allowing those people to gain access to a whole new world of people and culture and media. I strongly believe in the use of outside media to aid in language learning, such as movies, TV shows, music, and short texts, in addition to grammar lessons and frequent speaking sessions. I believe in the power of confidence in language learning; one has to learn to speak even if mistakes are present!

In history, I believe in the power of both big picture and in fascinating details. A secret to history learning is that historians don't memorize dates; they simply remember them in relation to a timeline in their heads built upon how events interacted with each other. It's easy to remember a timeframe of an event if you know the situation in which it occurred. This emphasis on context makes history much more easily understood and much more relevant to our daily lives.

I have experience and qualifications that make me an ideal tutor. I spent a school year teaching English to French students in France October 2015 - May 2016. I have taken French since I was 13 years old and have loved the language ever since! I studied at a French university in France January 2014 - June 2014, so I have lived and gone to school and worked in France (and in the French language). I have tutored and taught in both French and English. I have always had high grades, love working with others (especially children), love teaching, and am empathetic and quick to spot problems in understanding which I quickly resolve with relatable explanations.

Please feel free to contact me and discuss scheduling a lesson! My door is always open!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

My first history class was AP U.S. History. I loved the course and received a 5 on the AP test. Since this time, I have studied history throughout my education career, minoring in history at American University.

English

English is my native language. In addition, I am in love with words and grammar and am able to translate that love into engaging tutoring.

European History

I have always loved history, and one of my first history classes was AP European History. I loved the course and received a 5 on the AP test. Since this time, I have studied French history in France while attending university there. I am an enthusiastic tutor of history because I believe so strongly in its importance. My students have told me that I make history engaging and easily understood.

French

I have studied the French language since I was 13 years old. I have lived in France twice, once to attend university (direct-enrolled in Institut Catholique de Paris) and once to work as an English-language teaching assistant in a French high school and middle school. My experience speaking French as both a student and as an employee has given me an excellent grasp of the language. As a teaching assistant in a foreign language, I know the pitfalls of learning a new language and how students best learn. The head English teacher of my school told me I was the best language assistant the school had ever had, and I take that honor very seriously.

World History

I have studied history throughout my education career, minoring in history at American University and studying French history in France while attending university there. My major in International Studies also gave me a strong understanding of world history, which I supplemented with further history studies in university.
