About Mary

I have always derived great satisfaction from helping others master complicated subjects. I have a Ph.D. and an M.A. in Art History from Rutgers University, where I specialized in nineteenth-century French art. This built on my undergraduate education at Case Western Reserve University, where I majored in Art History and French and minored in Gender Studies. I like teaching historical subjects and writing because I believe it's important for students to understand and articulate how history and the arts can help them understand the world around them.

My teaching experience includes four years as an instructor in humanities subjects at Rutgers University. This has provided me with insight into how high school students can prepare early to succeed at the college level. My experiences in meeting with students one-on-one to supplement in-class instruction have taught me the necessity of patiently explaining course concepts to students in multiple ways until they find ways of thinking that work for them now and that they can apply in the future.

I have taught college-level Art History courses, including both broad surveys and specific periods of time, and I have completed art historical coursework in a broad variety of time periods, media, and geographic ranges. I understand how students struggle with memorizing information and can help with strategies to master the historical concepts and vocabulary necessary for succeeding in an art history class.

In the course of earning my Ph.D., I passed qualifying exams that considered art history in Europe and America between 1750 and 1950. This success required developing a command of major historical concepts that could then be used to discuss artworks. As an instructor in art history, I have developed strategies for helping students learn the components of historical movements and events that can be put in service of mastering European and American history.

I also spent two years teaching college-level Expository Writing (similar to AP English Language and Composition). I understand the challenges students face as they search texts for important information and the grammatical and structural elements they struggle with in constructing an essay argument about non-fiction texts.

I am happy to talk with students to understand what they need to improve and how they're struggling so that both parties come to lessons as prepared as possible. If you think I might be a good tutor for you, don't hesitate to contact me.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Art History

I have a B.A. in Art History from Case Western Reserve University, and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Art History from Rutgers University. I have served as a teaching assistant for college-level survey courses covering ancient through contemporary art. I have also supervised undergraduate thesis projects in Art History and have taught more specific upper-level courses on topics including French Impressionism.
