I am a professionally accredited tutor working at Owens Community College for the last three years. Working with all types of styles and formats of writing is a common theme in a small college. I have learned to work with a varying clientele due to the college since a large number of returning students at the community college level may or may not have a good understanding of English. This gives me an advantage of being able to assess a students weaknesses and strengths in order to tailor the tutoring session to them.
I am not there to edit or write; I am there to help them learn the material, so they become confident in their own abilities. I have had students with minimal skills become accomplished writers in college. I have an easy going demeanor, but I expect students to be ready with questions and concerns. I expect an assignment sheet, completed research, and an willingness to work. I am a professionally accredited tutor working at Owens Community College for the last three years. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Our past is an amazing adventure. It is one of the best pieces of fiction in existence, and it has no ending yet. There are figures both big and small to learn about. My education in history comes from my own work in history with local museums and my collegiate career.
I am qualified to tutor in English for a couple of reasons. One, I am a certified tutor at Owens Community College as a Writing Tutor. Second, I am half-way through my MA in English and Creative Writing with a 4.0 GPA. I have honed my method of tutoring to follow the Socratic Method.
I have been tutoring students in the use of grammar for three years at the college level. I believe that all students can learn to use proper grammar in their writing with minimal effort. Since my education is expanding daily, it is reasonable that my abilities to instruct and assist students with grammatical questions will improve.
I am working on my MA in English and Creative Writing; studying literature is part and parcel for the course. I love to read, and often find myself recommending older books to students. It gives me a chance to introduce them to some of the truly great authors.
I have tutored in math for nearly three years. Although my degree is not in math, my previous college work was in Aerospace Engineering which included Calculus 1, 2, & 3. Working with numbers is always fun; it is the only subject in which you can check your own work.
If you write, you must edit. Proofreading is just part of the editing process. Over the last few years, I have read more papers than I can count. I often find that the worst thing to find in literature is poor grammar, and I know this comes from my own experience proof reading.
My education in communications includes public speaking. I have assisted students at Owens Community College with speeches, and I have spoken at events in Hardin County. Working with speeches or visual aides for a speaking event has helped me hone my own skills.
I love to read. There is nothing like sitting down to read some Edgar Allen Poe, Jack London, or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I have yet to teach reading or literature, but with my college work, I know it is only a matter of time. There are so many great works of fiction and non-fiction.
I possess a very strong vocabulary due to my work on preparing for the Graduate Requisite Exam this fall. This examination will allow me to continue my progress towards a doctorate degree in English. Therefore, my comprehension of the English language s well founded.
Being a published non-fiction writer, well versed in essays, and have finished a novel; I have a strong understanding of writing. I spend several hours composing and researching my craft, and I feel that it is something that everyone should know. We should all know how to write in order to communicate with the people around us.
