I have worked online with students from: Ohio, Georgia, Illinois, Florida, New Jersey, California and even Puerto Rico!

I come to personal tutoring with a background in physics (both theoretical and experimental). I spent 9 years at two different universities and earned 3 diplomas in physics (B.Sc., M.Sc. written in French and Ph.D. written in English) all financed by scholarships. I spent two years teaching physics in Africa and also spent 2 other years working as a research scientist at a national laboratory in Europe. During my university years, I worked as a teaching assistant for student laboratories in physics and even did some one-to-one tutoring. All along, I admired my teachers and colleagues who always showed me something new to learn.

As for my methods, I like to use definitions and go to the fundamentals, all explained in a concise way. I am more mathematically oriented. I am also an iPad fan and love to use educational software and books on it. Let me show you how much I loved to be a student myself during my studies!

Today, I am Adjunct Faculty with the physics department at Kent State University. I am also married to a faculty member at Kent State University (women in physics are still a rarity!) and we have a son in college.

I started tutoring with WyzAnt in September 2010. Since then I have built a U.S. curriculum in:

. Mathematica and the Wolfram Language
. homeschooling Middle School math
. physics (HS and graduate college level, MCAT physics and physics for the allied health)
. statistics (college level, HAWKES learning system for MHA)
. precalculus (HS)
. college calculus
. prealgebra (Middle School, HS)
. algebra 1 and 2 (HS and college)
. 9th grade geometry (honors)
. 9th grade physical science
. ROOT data analysis software from CERN
. math ALEKS system
. ACT math
. French
. German (beginner)

A big thank to all the amazing students I have met throu

During my years as a particle physicist, I have worked on several computers like VAX and the powerful IBM VM at CERN. I am an old school procedural programmer who learned FORTRAN 77 and 90 at first and then migrated to PASCAL (Macintosh) and eventually C. Today I work with ROOT which is the C++ data structure and graphic environment for particle physics at CERN which uses a great deal of C programming! Today I use the book "C programmierung" (written in German!) for my lessons. It is full of simple exercises from variable types to functions to structures.

I have been with Apple from the beginning of my scientific career! I wrote 2 theses in physics on a Macintosh Plus! I could write programs in Pascal and do calculations that could last the whole night. Today I use the iPad and many software features reminds me of the early Apple software products, 25 years or so later. I use Pages and Keynote extensively on the iPad as well as LaTeX for scientific typesetting. I have experience on iMacs also where I now write C-programs for scientific calculations.
Mathematica

Having programmed computers for a numerous of years, I have finally found a software that does everything. Since I became an adjunct faculty, like many U.S. college student now, I have access to the full Mathematica Wolfram language.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I love Algebra and I love doing math exercises and problems. This is really my hobby. I also tutor in pre-algebra. For both I use a series of books in algebra 1 and 2 that help me structure lessons to the rhythm of the student.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Math is my hobby! I love to do algebra exercises. I have experience tutoring Wyzant students in Algebra 2 at High School and college level. I am familiar with the Algebra 2 program about functions, domain and ranges, inverse functions, and more!
Calculus,

Calculus

Calculus is the study of variation of quantities. In physics, which is my background, we encounter this when comparing length scales and doing approximations to calculate limits of functions, near a given value or at infinity. For my tutoring, I follow a series of books I had during my studies. The numerous exercises they offer helped me complete my courses in college with success. That is what I offer today to my students!
Geometry,

Geometry

I have completed short and long tutoring in Honors Geometry. I still read the material posted by the teacher of this class to keep in shape! I enjoy it a lot! I have had good experience with high school students with this class. I also use software, I subscribe to, that may help students practice with the concepts!
Physics,

Physics

Physics always interests me! I am intrigued by its complexity but also its fundamental nature. I have experience with physics problems from High School to graduate classes. I perform very well with problems of online classes! Let me help you in your study of physics!
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I have literature in Elementary Algebra with which I base my tutoring lessons. Believe me, I love it and I am ready to help youngsters achieve their best.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

When I was a student in calculus, I worked with a well known book series which I still use today in my tutoring lessons in precalculus. They list in 45 chapters the skills needed for a student to succeed in precalculus, among them: algebra, functions, linear and nonlinear equations, matrices, limit and continuity, etc. A lot to discover for any student indeed!
SAT Math,

SAT Math

The SAT has its ways. It requires fast thinking for problems that are challenging. I practice regularly with material found online. Of course, we could all study alone, but it is much better to work with someone who can guide you quickly!

Differential Equations,

Differential Equations

I have studied differential equations in mathematics and in physics. The simplest differential equations involve the exponential function as real or imaginary solutions. They appear with the force equation for oscillatory and damped harmonic oscillator solutions for example. On a more formal level Lagrangian or Hamiltonian principle can be used in quantum mechanics. Solutions for the Schrödinger equation for the Hydrogen atom involve series methods and lead to Legendre polynomials as solutions, also known as atomic orbitals. Modern methods deal with differential equations that can be solved using finite elements methods.
Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

I like to consider myself as an "algebrist", if the word exists. I am fascinated by the foundation of mathematics and group theory. That is to say I love to do mathematical problems. Whether it is related to the properties of functions, limits, to rational numbers and trigonometry, I am ready to help.

Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

Linear algebra is the fundamental first approach when comparing quantities. An algebra is based on group theory. From there vector space and matrices space can be built. During my study in physics, especially in particle physics, I became familiar with methods in the eigen-vector/eigen-value problem, the 8-fold way and the SU(3) quark model, abelian and non-abelian groups, Lie algebra for angular momentum operators in quantum theory, crystallographic space groups, etc. Which are all examples of linear algebra!

Patient and flexible

Jean-Guy is very patient. I have a VERY difficult time grasping and remembering math. Jean-Guy made extra time to work with me and made a point to fit in extra time for me.

Pre-Calculus Tutoring

Jean-Guy was very helpful with teaching me how to graph parametric equations, and explained things very well. I will definitely use him again.

Ben, 1 lesson with Jean Guy

Very good tutor

I had a very good experience with Jean. I learned many things from him and it was useful and helped me more. If I want to repeat that, of course I will choose Jean. He worked very well to help me and my friend also. He used many different ways to give me what I need in my course. Thank you Jean for everything .
