The Ohio State University (Elementary Education)
The University of Findlay (Master's)
I graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelors of Science in Education with an emphasis in math. I continued in my education to attend the University of Findlay where I received my master's degree in Elementary Education. Since then I have been a tutor to 5th grade students in all areas including prep for upcoming state testing. I have taught second grade, kindergarten, as well as special needs preschool.
I am well diverse in education. I am able to teach a large classroom full of students as well as one on one with a child who is struggling or needs the extra boost to reach that milestone they are striving for. In my lessons, I use a hands on approach, as well as including the student in the learning process. Students learn best when they are part of the lesson. This also builds confidence and a sense of pride.
I have taken multiple courses in college, as well as graduate level courses on not only teaching children to read, but to understand what they are reading. Being a kindergarten teacher for over five years gave me insight into how children begin to read, and my experience with older children gave me experience on how to help them understand how to read and how to read well, but most importantly a love a reading.
During my teaching career I made the transition from state standards to common core standards. At the time we did not have curriculum that correlated with the Common Core so I was part of a team that created our curriculum for our grade level that aligned to the Common Core.
With my diverse background I am able to tutor grades Prek- 5, where I will focus on the content that is most needed and make it hands on and fun for the student.
Being a kindergarten teacher for many years, I believe Phonics is the beginning to the reading process. Letter sounds and blends are where a child needs to begin in order to read and read well. I have seen the struggle in the older grades where children do not have the foundation of phonics and it truly affects their reading ability.
Please contact me if your child is struggling and needs the extra boost from an experienced teacher who is eager to help your child succeed. I am willing to meet at the local library or online. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught kindergarten for five years using the common core. Due to not having common core curriculum, I was on a team where we created our own common core curriculum. I was in charge of presenting it to our team and staff.
