About Randy

Hi, I'm Randy and I specialize in French and History tutoring for students of all ages and experience levels. I have taught over 50 students in both subjects and work with all of them to create a program designed specifically for their individual goals and needs. I can help you with all aspects of French including vocabulary, grammar, conversation, and overall fluency. I specialize in European and American History from the Early Medieval to Modern periods.

About me: I have been a French tutor with WyzAnt for one year. I have taken over 15 years of French collectively in Middle School, High School, College, and Graduate School. I received my BA in French and Political Science from Berea College in Kentucky and am a graduate student in the Master of Arts in American History and Government program at Ashland University. I also spent a year in Paris during my tenure there for an immersive experience in French History and culture. In addition, I am a Certified Educator with Duolingo Learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I excel in Algebraic problem-solving. My passion for math combined with a desire to help others succeed in the best field of mathematics fuels a creative approach to a subject that many find dull and tiresome.

American History

From the arrival of the first Europeans to contemporary news, my approach to American History is simple: To make a better society for the future, we must know who we are, who we were so that we can develop a vision of who it is we want to be. My coursework and professional interest in American History makes the subject most find boring spring to life and my former student will attest that I have changed their view of History as a subject by my methods!

English

As an avid language learner, it was critical for me to understand my native tongue to be best equipped to learn another. Grammar, composition, vocabulary are all fields in which I have tutored students, mostly to prepare them for language learning. The context in which you teach these subjects defines the resulting retention and application so I have found in my experience that taking students on an adventure and away from the stigma of learning goes a long way. I also have tutored in foundations of English and analysis of root words and language ties.

European History

I specialize in 14th-Contemporary European History. From the signing of the Treaty of Westphalia to yesterday's Questions to the Prime Minister, I have dedicated years to the study of European affairs and make learning about this continent fun, engaging, and meaningful.

French

Student Teaching; French I, II. Remedial French.
Teaching Assistant; French III-V. 17th-20th Century French Literature. French Civilization and Immersion.
I use French every day, whether that's listening to the Euro1 radio or catching an episode of a French TV show. The key to learning French is to immerse and surround yourself with it, and my tutoring style seamlessly integrates the language into your everyday life!

Geography

As a citizen of the 21st century, polyglot, and Political Science graduate, Geography is a subject very close to my studies and my interests. I have coached former students to accurately locate, describe, and give factual evidence about every nation-state on the globe, in under 10 minutes!

Government & Politics

I have extensive coursework and written media in the fields of American Government, Foreign Relations, Intra-governmental affairs, and Constitutional Law and foundations of the Republican Democracy.

Political Science

I obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Berea College in 2012. I was a Teaching Assistant for the department and have done extensive research in the areas of European Politics, Constitutional Law, and American Government.

Reading

My approach to tutoring the subject of reading is to approach the content as if it were a puzzle. My students objective is to deconstruct the passage(s), identify the components, and reassemble them in their original order with a better understanding of what the passage(s) is about. This approach has been very effective for my former students and is very simple to teach. Once a student begins to read using my methodology, they will be able to read any media with a complete understanding of its meaning.

Vocabulary

I have tutored in English and French vocabulary for over 5 years. My method of repetition and integration into native contexts enhances the importance and retention of any set of vocabulary. I have experience integrating vocabulary lessons with technology so students can take their studies on the go and it becomes a joy instead of a chore. My former students have expressed the utmost appreciation for my methodology and its effectiveness.

World History

Blending my studies and experience teaching geography, language, political science, and European History, my personal passion is the history of the world we inhabit and studying the cultures, personas, victories, and defeat of all those who came before us. It is my belief that our primary responsibility to society is to carry forth all that has happened before for our posterity, while adding, perfecting, and enhancing for the betterment of our society.
