About Karen

I have been a high school social studies teacher for the last 13 years, and because of a recent move am extending my love of education to a one-on-one relationship with students. Tutoring seems a great mix for my interest in all kinds of subjects; my joy of helping students progress and feel satisfied with their results; and my desire to be able to work with one student at a time so I can find what interests them, and help them make connections to their current school work and the world around them.

My knowledge of social science, and experiences in life, have helped me to connect to many other subjects over the years, so I am willing to work with all ages of learners and course material. Besides Political Science and U.S. and World History, I also have a background in Journalism, English and Literature, and many other topics that could help students excel.

My schedule is open to meeting during the daytime or early evenings. And I can also work with students online if that works best with their schedules and needs.

If you are a learner who is seeking creative ways to explore, experiment, and enjoy challenges that will help you excel in life, please contact me.

I graduated cum laude in college
4.0 in all English/Literature courses.
I majored in Political Science and History in college and taught high school Government and U.S. and World History for 13 years.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Criminal Justice

I taught social studies at a Laboratory School in Muncie, IN, for 13 years, and created and taught a Law Class for several years. I also received a teaching degree, taking several criminal justice and constitutional law courses over the years.

Elementary (K-6th)

Educational Background: Received an Indiana license to teach students 6-12th, and taught at Burris Laboratory School, in Muncie, IN on Ball State's campus, for 13 years.

Experience & Tutoring Methods: I taught in the high school level, but because Burris is a K-12 school, I was involved with elementary students through team teaching projects, and learned and experienced methods of teaching that work for K-12 learners, such as using visuals and media sources, making sure students have needed supplies, adding artifacts as part of the lesson, and finding out what your child needs and is specifically interested in learning.

Political Science

I have a Bachelor of Science from Ball State University, in Muncie, Indiana, and majored in social studies, with a primary in government. I had to take many Political Science courses to do so, and have taught Government and U.S. History at a Laboratory School.

Reading

I have taught social studies classes for 13 years in Indiana, and have been an avid reader and have had a love of literature since a child. I feel very confident I can create a friendly environment, find what interests your child, and incorporate reading help all at the same time.

Religion

Teaching World History the last 13 years at Burris Laboratory School, on Ball State's campus in Muncie, IN, gave me the opportunity to teach about the major world religions and philosophies. This was one aspect of teaching World History I Ioved the most.

Social Studies

I received a BS at Ball State University, in Muncie, IN, and majored with a teaching degree in social studies. My current Indiana teaching license allows me to teach social studies in the 6th-12th grades. I taught at a Laboratory School (U.S. and World History; government; many social studies electives) for 13 years.

Study Skills

As a classroom teaching the last 13 years at Burris Laboratory School in Muncie, IN I advised, tutored, and worked in study skills classes with an array of diverse learners on a daily basis.
