Haverford College (History)
The Citadel (Master's)
I am a National Board Certified Teacher with 13 years of classroom teaching experience in English and Social Studies. I am seeking opportunities to work with students in a one-to-one or small group settings that will allow me to tailor instruction to my students' individual needs. I have a strong background in writing and education, am currently licensed to teach English and Social Studies by the State of Ohio, and hold a Masters in Education from The Citadel (Charleston, SC).
In addition to my classroom teaching experience, I also bring my parenting experience to bear on my work as a tutor. I have two children in 4th and 6th grade in Hilliard City Schools. As a father, I understand the joys and challenges of working with kids and I also understand the importance of maintaining positive relationships to keep kids motivated and ready to work.
As part of my National Board Certification Process, I was evaluated in the area of "Student Growth as Readers and Writers." I received a 4/4 on my evaluation in that area. One aspect of my teaching that made this possible was my focus on assessing students and matching my material to the levels and interests of my students. Being able to work in a one-on-one or small group setting brings this strength to the fore since I can dial into whatever levels or interests my students show, then use this information to construct a path for learning.
In 1996 I graduated from Haverford College with a Double Major in History and Sociology. After serving as the founding 8th Grade Reading teacher for KIPP Columbus Middle School, I went on to teach Social Studies and currently serve as the Social Studies Department Chair.
During the summer my schedule opens up a great deal and I can take on a fairly heavy tutoring load. I feel confident that I can help every student find a personal pathway to success. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
