About Edward

I am a retired teacher from the Granville Schools and have had more than 40 years of classroom teaching and experience tutoring students after retirement. I have an engaging personality and had the reputation of being a fun and interesting history teacher.

I really enjoy working with students and helping them improve the potential that each one has. I am extremely flexible in my schedule and will be willing to work out a schedule that best fits the student's needs. I am very much a student-oriented teacher/tutor and will work extremely hard with you to help you find the success that you are looking for.

My tutoring style is very much like my teaching style...engage students in their own learning by using a variety of teaching resources as well as various teaching techniques.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Baseball

I was an all-Ohio baseball player in high school and played the game for 25 years until I was married at the age of 30. I coached baseball seventeen years at the middle school level when I was an active teacher and coach. I pride myself on not only being able to coach the skills of the game (throwing, hitting fielding, pitching), but also in understanding at a deep level the nuances of the game. Baseball has been a love of my mine for most of my childhood and adult life and over the years I have become a student of the game.

Cooking

I am a self-made cook who has learned over the years many of the necessary techniques of fine cooking. I have done the vast majority of cooking in our family during the 37 years of our marriage. My specialties are excellent soups and salads, stews, and dishes from most cuisines. I am also skilled in food preparation and would be someone who could help tutor a person who wanted to learn some of the basics of cooking. I have at my disposal a multitude of cookbooks in which to practice recipes with students.

Political Science

I have taught high school government classes during my forty plus years of teaching in public secondary schools. I also took political science courses in my comprehensive social studies curriculum in both my undergraduate and graduate degrees from Ohio State University. Also, I have taught some of the great political theorists such as Locke, Rousseau, Montesquieu, and others during the study of U.S. and World History courses.

Public Speaking

Over forty years in the classroom has prepared me to understand many of the basic concepts of public speaking. I also led a debate club for several years at one of the high schools I taught in. While teaching debate, I worked with students on various aspects of public speaking including gathering facts, persuasive speaking, and other elements of public speaking. I also served as chief negotiator for our teacher's bargaining unit and was responsible for speaking in front of teachers' groups, the school community, and the board of education. Through this practical experience, I learned techniques of public speaking that I can pass on to students.

Religion

My educational background in Social Studies education includes the study of religions in a historical context. I have also taught a comparative religion course in which the major world religions of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism were stressed. In teaching World History, some of the minor religions such as Confucianism, Taoism, and others were taught as a part of the regional study of the world.

Social Studies

My certification in the state of Ohio is in comprehensive social studies grades 7-12. I completed 90 hours of comprehensive social studies courses in my undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University in 1969 and followed that with a Masters degree from Ohio State in Social studies education in 1977. I taught for over forty years in grades 7-12 a variety of social studies courses.

Sociology

I have taught sociology at the high school level during my 40 plus years of teaching. Sociology courses were also a part of my undergraduate comprehensive social studies major. Also, as a part of my graduate degree I took courses in Urban Sociology and Political Sociology. My undergraduate courses focused upon more general sociology courses which got into theory and common sociological concepts that students should know and understand.

Study Skills

For years I have worked with students in my classes on organizational and study skills that helped them in their various subject areas. While in my undergraduate studies at Ohio State, I actually took a class in Psychology my first quarter of attendance that taught study skills. This class helped me throughout the rest of my undergraduate and graduate courses. I have applied many of those principles in my own teaching of study skills with students. I am also familiar with digital apps that can be used to help with reading and study skills that will improve student performance.
