About Richard

I teach because I get personal fulfillment from it. I care, I take the job seriously, I believe that learning occurs in environments that are safe and supportive. If asked what makes a good teacher, I would say these things make the most difference, but I understand that parents need to know more about the academic background of the tutor they hire. My background is broad.

I have studied at a number of reputable universities. I graduated with honors from an Ivy League undergraduate program, and then worked in literacy and language research at the University of Texas. I am currently --albeit slowly-- finishing a doctoral program at George Washington University in the District of Columbia. My research has focused on language, special education, and behavioral disorders. I have published in peer reviewed journals on autism.

My preference is to teach language and literacy, but I have a broad range of teaching experiences, including teaching middle and high school mathematics. I am currently obtaining certification to teach in Ohio, but I have 20 years of research and teaching experiences. I have strong references and confidence in my ability to teach...I really think it is my calling.

Thank you for reviewing my profile. RM

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
