Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

GED

This is one class that I have been teaching through the Penn Foster Program. At the time that I work with the students, I find out where they are, what they need and take it from there. At the present time I have 15 graduates, 10 pending, and 14 active students in my class. This program is highly successful, and it is enjoyable to see the students build their confidence.

Microsoft PowerPoint

In most of my college classes the students are required to do at least one PowerPoint presentation in a term. Again, we start out with the basic concepts of PowerPoint, let the student do the exercise on their own. Show the students how to achieve what they are trying to do. By taking it step-by-step the students start to get excited about their projects and take the steps to learn no skills on their own.

Microsoft Word

In my Microsoft Word classes we start out with the basic concepts about Word. Some of my students have never used word, and they are afraid to use it. I use Powerpoint presentations to show and explain how to achieve a goal. The next step would be to let the student try this project on their own. I am available to assist them, but do not hover over them. As time goes by the students begin to build confidence, and are willing to try new projects on their own.

Study Skills

At the present time I am the Lead Instructor for the "Success in Study Skills" at a College. While studying at Walden University my strengths were: First Generation College Students and College Success. I am also teaching Study Skills at two other colleges. The time period I have been teaching this subject is five years.

Vocabulary

At the present time I am teaching Comprehensive Reading and the goal in this course is to enhance their vocabulary. It is shocking that so many adults have such a limited vocabulary, and when they read or write they have trouble understanding the words. In my class I have incorporated added vocabulary in many different ways. Every day we have a "word" of the day, we spell the word, write the word, and learn the meaning. By the end of the week we have about 75 new words, which the class is quizzed on. At first the class did not like this, but after a few weeks their vocabulary list has grown, and the students incorporate the words into their every day life.
