About Kristen

I am a certified K-6 teacher, who specializes in Special Education. I have taught for 14 years all around the world as a military spouse. I am a local teacher, and have a multitude of experience with students who have disabilities such as Learning Disabilities, Autism, Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities and ADD/ADHD.

My mission is to empower and encourage children to reach their full potential no matter what their learning needs are. Some children are gifted and need to be challenged to stretch themselves to be the best they can be. Others have learning disabilities and need extra attention and care to ensure they have every opportunity to succeed. All students, gifted, disabled or anything in between can benefit from a hands on, engaging and rigorous approach to learning. I believe tailoring my lessons to each student's individual needs, optimizes their progress, self esteem and love for learning.

My passion is working with kids and I will work my hardest to ensure your child learns what they need to in order to be successful in school. The success of every child is my goal and I will do whatever it takes to achieve that goal to the benefit of the students, their families and ultimately their education.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Special Education and have worked extensively with students with ADHD. I have implemented both sensory integration techniques (School Moves) and individualized behavior plans to tailor towards ADD/ADHD students.

Common Core

I am currently a teacher for Dayton Public Schools and have had extensive training in our state's Common Core State Standards through Professional Development. I write weekly lesson plans that incorporate our CCSS within my teaching each and every day.

Dyslexia

I have both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Special Education and have worked extensively with students with mild and moderate learning disabilities both in the areas of Reading and Mathematics. I have written thorough IEP's goals and objectives, along with appropriate accommodations and modifications to their learning and learning styles based on our extensive Psychological reports. I have understanding of learning styles and hands on learning to involve auditory, tactile and visual learning methods to teach students with Dyslexia. I also have training in Project Read which details phonemic skills and rules to teach those students with learning disabilities.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Special Education. I have taught Special Education K-6 for 12 years. I am currently a self contained Special Education teacher for K-3 for Dayton Public Schools and have been teaching for DPS for 7 years.

Phonics

I have both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Special Education. I have taught Special Education for 14 years, and through my elementary education experience I have taught all subject areas. Currently I teach in a Self Contained Special Education classroom and teach all subject areas for primary students. Such subjects include Reading (Phoemic Awareness/Phonics, Comprehension, Fluency), Mathematics, Spelling, Writing Process/Handwriting, Science and Social Studies. All areas are based on our state's Common Core State Standards.

Special Needs

I have both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Special Education. I have taught Special Education K-6 for 12 years. I am currently working towards my Educational Specialist degress in Special Education through The University of Florida. Before teaching for 14 years, I was a paraprofessional in a Special Education classroom while attending college. Many years have been spent dealing with those student with special needs, both in the classroom and out in the community. I was an active member of the Special Olympics and a teacher for Special Needs summer school program.

Study Skills

As a teacher for a local school district, I have taught Study Skills to students during after school tutoring for the (prior) OAA standardized state test in order to prepare for the test. Such study skills were taught in tutoring sessions 3x a week after school along with study skills pamphlets sent home to aide the parents to work with their children.
