About Gail

I have permanent Ohio certificates in Special Education. I taught in the Cleveland School system for 30 years teaching autistic children grades K through 12. I was awarded the Martha Holden Jennings scholarship during my years of teaching. I also use positive learning techniques and positive behavior plans.

I prefer tutoring elementary-aged students and am able to administer test taking skills and tests. At present, I am retired from teaching. I enjoy tutoring students and using my skills to better their education. I prefer to meet in a library, but will also tutor in the student's home if necessary. When I tutored before, I did tutor in the homes and library. I can tutor any day of the week and any time of the day. I also prefer special education students. Thank you.

Teaching English and grammar is what I prefer to teach. I taught several nonverbal students to read and some eventually to talk. I enjoy this type of teaching.

I am a fun teacher and reward students for positive learning.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Aspergers

I have taught autistic students including Aspergers for 30 years, specifically working on language and communication. I have also taught social skills, written iep's, and behavior management.

Autism

I have taught autistic children for 30 years. I have taught students from age 4 to 22. I have encountered every level of the autism spectrum. I have also educated nonverbal as well as verbal students. Some of the students were deaf and blind. I feel this background has wholeheartedly embraced the autistic student. I have several accolades from parents praising my teaching skills.

Dyslexia

I have taught several students with dyslexia invoking a variety of methods to improve this condition. I had several autistic students that were also dyslexic and would try several methods to improve this condition.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have permanent Ohio certificates in Special Education. I taught in the Cleveland School system for 30 years teaching autistic children grades K through 12. Often during my teaching career, I did substitute in regular classrooms. I also taught high functioning autistic students from the regular curriculum.

Handwriting

When teaching during my career, I often focused on elementary skills which included handwriting. Students of autism had difficulty writing and speaking and I often taught handwriting including cursive.

Hard Of Hearing

I have taught mentally and physically challenged students throughout my 30 year teaching career. I am proficient in sign language which can help hard of hearing students.

Phonics

When teaching reading, I usually taught phonetically because that seems to be the way most of the students would learn to sound out words. I would use pictures and sounds to teach this. I also would often use sight words to teach this also.

Special Needs

Throughout my teaching career my students were autistic and mentally challenged as well as physically challenged. I taught students with seizures and severe behavior disorders. I taught students with feeding tubes and also high functioning autistic students. There were a variety of students with numerous special needs.
