About Sharon

I've been a teacher for over 30 years and I am currently licensed as an elementary teacher as well as an intervention specialist. This summer I became qualified to assess and tutor for dyslexia through the successful Susan Barton system. This broadens my ability to help students in reading, spelling, and writing. After all those years in the classroom, wonderful teacher workshops, and a very bountiful supply of my own resource materials, I am able to offer lessons that engage all learning styles. Also, I take pride in finding interactive, hands-on ways for my students to show what they have learned. Helping students understand how to attack those pesky achievement tests is another topic to which I am committed!

I am eagerly looking forward to working one-on-one with students to help them be successful learners. I believe this is the best way to help any student because it allows them to show where they are having trouble without worrying what others will think. I work hard at putting my students at ease and letting them know I want them to be successful learners. I keep them and their parents informed of their progress after each session and then again after 5 sessions. If a student or parent lets me know at least 24 hours beforehand that a session will be missed, I will reschedule the session for a later time that meets both our schedules. I offer a free meeting for us to get to know each other, which will take place at the Hilliard Public Library on Cemetery Road. We will also work on our schedules and tutoring locations at this meeting.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I have the opportunity to teach grades 6-8 following the Common Core Standards in English and social studies. I also have experience locating the standards for each grade and each subject area. I have numerous resources for teaching the Common Core.

Handwriting

I have taught print, cursive, and d'nealian forms of handwriting. Also, I am left handed and know how to help others slant their paper and hold their pencils correctly. I use various mediums to practice handwriting.

Phonics

I have taught phonics for many years. Also, this past summer I worked on obtaining a reading specialist certification which included two classes on phonemic awareness and development. Also, my certification with Susan Barton for dyslexia is strongly phonics based. Due to all this experience I have an extensive resource base on hand for tutoring!

Study Skills

This is a very important subject in developing an IEP for a child. As an intervention specialist I often addressed these skills with my students. It is an area that needs to be mastered early and needs to be tailored to the individual student.
