About Janelle

Hello! Thanks for stopping by my profile!

**Currently, I am only taking requests for assistance with college essays or editing as my regular tutoring schedule is full. Meetings to discuss essays can take place on the weekend, or we can work together by email. In-person meetings for essays are billed at $45 per hour or $35 per hour for remote editing. Worried about getting into the college of your dreams? Your personal statement is a key part of the admissions process -- let's work together to make your statement shine! A small investment now will pay off later as college acceptances and scholarships come rolling in!**

Want to communicate better? I'm happy to help you! I have been teaching students of all ages for more than 15 years, and I can help you with English slang, conversation, grammar, or TOEFL, IELTS, EIKEN, SAT, ACT and other proficiency tests. Over the years, most of my students have been from China, Korea, and Japan, but I have also taught students from Mexico, Peru, Saudi Arabia, India, Libya, and several other places. I believe that each person can teach others, so I enjoy learning from my students as well. I am happy to work with all ages -- my students have ranged from age 3 to age 75. One of my most favorite memories as a tutor was when I helped a grandmother learn basic English so she could begin to communicate with her granddaughter. No one is too old or too young to learn a new language!

I have also taught group SAT classes at a local Chinese school for the past 6 years, and I am constantly staying up-to-date with ongoing trends in the field of education. I have worked at OSU in higher education for more than 10 years (Go Buckeyes!), so I can also help students with preparing for college applications. Recently, one of my students got a 2390 on his SAT and another one got a 35 on his ACT! I have been helping students with proficiency tests and college admissions essays for the past several years. My students have been accepted to The Ohio State University, Northwestern University, Case Western Reserve University, Cornell, George Washington University, Fordham College, and several others. I'm very proud of their hard work.

Although my main area of expertise is English, I have also tutored and taught Japanese and Spanish. I have enjoyed helping students prepare to visit or relocate to Japan and watched them grow with the language.

I offer private individual or group lessons on the OSU campus, in the Dublin library, in your home, or in my home. No matter what you'd like to learn, I am here to help you. My goal is to help you meet yours! I am very flexible to help you study what you would like to study. No matter what your goal is, we will work towards it together!

Please note:
I require 24 hours notice for cancellation of a lesson. Any cancellation or no-shows that occur within this time will be assessed a flat $25 fee. The fee is not charged during cancellations due to weather. Please keep in mind that when you cancel a lesson at the last minute, you are preventing another student from getting assistance, so please plan carefully. Thank you in advance!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have been teaching English grammar courses for over 6 years. Don't let the ACT get in the way of attending the college of your dreams -- I can show you how to maximize your test score by improving your score on the ACT English portion of the test, both the essay and the multiple choice sections. A student of mine earlier this year received a perfect score on the ACT English section, and others have seen increases of 5-8 points!

College Counseling

I have worked as an academic advisor in multiple graduates program for Ohio State University for over 9 years. During this time, I helped students with many areas, ranging from the application process, to career counseling, to financial aid and HR benefits, to navigating the university system. I sat on committees so I am familiar with how the admissions process works, and I can guide students in preparing for tests as well as writing reference letters and personal statements.

I have tutored students of all ages in ESL and English for the past 15 years. I have tutored students for their middle school and high school English classes, helping them improve their grades, and I have also worked with ESL students so they become more comfortable in English in order to pass tests and succeed in interviews. I am able to help students who are strong in English and need to improve to the highest level, as well as those who struggle with the subject.

Hello! I've been teaching and tutoring students in ESOL for over 15 years. I believe that English is not only memorizing grammar, I want to help you to gain confidence in the language and communicate effectively. However, if you are interested in preparation for English tests (TOEFL, IELTS, EIKEN, etc.), I can also help you with that. I also speak Japanese and Spanish so I know what it's like to learn a second language!

My goal is to help you reach your goals! I hope to meet you soon :)

I have been teaching English grammar courses for over 5 years. Whether you are a native English speaker hoping to write and speak better, a high school student hoping to improve test scores, or an ESOL student struggling with grammar points, I'm here to help you understand the tricky rules of English grammar!

I have been tutoring students in ESL for the past 15 years, and have helped several students prepare for the IELTS test. I am familiar with the bands and scoring of the test. Most of my experience with IELTS has been with helping students with the speaking and writing portions of the test; last year, I helped two students improve their scores over 2 months from a 4.5 to a 6.0 and 6.5, which was enough to get them into two graduate programs in the United States.

Hajimemashite! I have been tutoring students in Japanese language for the past 10 years and have also taught adult classes at 2 local community centers. I specialize in helping adults learn tricky grammar & cultural points, as well as preparing for moving to or visiting Japan. Each lesson will be tailored to your goals and level & we will have fun learning together. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu!

SAT Writing

I have been teaching classes in SAT writing for over 6 years. I can help students prepare for both the essay and multiple choice sections of the test.

The SAT Writing test is changing in 2016 -- will you be ready for the changes? I am currently assisting students in their preparations for both the current format and the old format of the test. My most recent student scored a perfect 80/80 on the multiple choice section of the exam.

I enjoy helping students learn and improve their writing skills!

Hola! Como estas? I have studied Spanish for several years at The Ohio State University and am currently working there part-time at the Center for Latin American Studies. I've also traveled to Spain and 7 countries in Latin America, so I would love to talk with you about travels to the Spanish-speaking world!

I have 15 years experience helping students study for all sections of the TOEFL test. It is important not only to understand the format and how the test works, but also to be comfortable communicating in English. My goal in teaching for the TOEFL is help you not only to get a good score, but also to help you become better at communicating in English. Thank you for stopping by my profile, and good luck!

I have been teaching classes in writing for over 6 years at a local non-profit organization. In college, I received a writing award for my senior thesis. Through private tutoring over the past 12 years, I have become skilled at helping students prepare for proficiency test essays, correct grammar and diction mistakes, and overcome fears of brainstorming. I enjoy helping students learn and improve their writing skills!
