About Shruti

Hello, my name is Shruti and I am currently enrolled as a Junior in the Education Department at Otterbein University. I am pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education with an endorsement as an Intervention Specialist. I have had 2 years of volunteering experience from high school and 2 years of student teaching experience through Otterbein. I have been in classrooms ranging from preschool to 8th grade in both general classrooms and special education classrooms. In addition, I have my FBI/BCI fingerprints and drug test on file. I love spending time with my family and painting in my free time.

I love working with children. Seeing students grow and learn is one of my favorite things to witness. I have had many volunteering, student teaching and internship opportunities over the years that has assured me that I love the Early Childhood Education field. Some of my strengths include: positivity, patience, determination and organizational skills. Through taking many levels of difficult classes, I feel like I have discovered many study skills and I would love to share that with others.

I have taken a semester long class on phonics which has helped me become more confident in teaching phonics to others. But in addition to taking that class, I had a written final exam and an oral final exam that made sure I not only knew the information on paper but that I could apply the information when working with a student.

I truly believe that learning is a treasure but it is not always easy and that there is nothing wrong with seeking extra help. I would love to work with you to try to help you with whatever I can. We will work together to make learning fun. A quote by Benjamin Franklin that always stuck with me was, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." I believe that working together, having fun and a positive attitude we can achieve the goal together. You are the future and helping you growing is my passion. I look forward to giving it my all to help you in whatever it may be. Please do not hesitate to contact me for any questions. Thank you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I am getting my licensure for education as an Intervention Specialist. This includes many learning disabilities. Such as ADHD, dyslexia and autism. In my phonics class we were asked to pass a dyslexia exam of 50 questions but in addition, we had to teach a child some sight words and how to figure out an unknown word, while they are reading. I feel knowledgeable about dyslexia but I also feel comfortable working with students one on one in strengthening their English, reading and vocabulary skills.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have had many opportunities to work with higher elementary students in reading and math. Throughout my field experiences in college, I have had the privilege to teach many English lessons in 4th and 5th grade. I have also had one semester of experience with 8th grade Science. My licensure allows me to teach Pre-k to 3rd, but in many of my classes, we are taught how to teach students who are a little older as well. For example, in my phonics class, we went into detail about language learning as a 8 and 9 year old with correlates with higher elementary and slightly into middle school. Although I will only be licensed to teach up until 3rd grade, we get lots of experience with grades 4 to 6 because we are usually interacting with them in the building. I believe that I will successfully be able to work with grades Pre-k to 6 because I have had over 200 hours in the classrooms, teaching, shadowing and volunteering.

Handwriting

Growing up my parents were very big on making sure my handwriting was neat. I can help master capital and lowercase letters but also if your child is making the letter reversed, which is very common in the younger ages. I believe that handwriting is something that comes with practice but can also take a lot of time to perfect. As an adult I love to make my own fonts and create art from it, but in order to do that I had to master basic handwriting skills. I believe that by giving my time and patience, I can help to improve the handwriting of your child.

Special Needs

I really enjoy working with kids with different needs. One of my strengths is patience. I am getting my licensure in Early Childhood Education and as an Intervention Specialist. I have had experience working with students with special needs ranging from elementary, middle school, high school and college. I have more experience with the moderate level.
