About Dan

I am an Ohio native who received both my B.A. and M.A from the Ohio State University in Chinese Language and Culture. In graduate school I taught Chinese in the K-12 distance education program, as well as individualized instruction. I lived in China for approximately 5 years before moving back to Ohio in 2014. My first trips were as a study abroad student and later on I permanently relocated to conduct international student recruitment with INTO University Partnerships. Not only was I constantly presenting and communicating in Chinese, I also was tasked with a wide variety of tasks that developed my proficiency in MS Excel. Since then, I have continued to expand those skills as a consultant and entrepreneur to develop multiple financial models, simulators, account management tools, and conduct complicated analyses.

All the while, I have been an avid practitioner and instructor of the martial arts. Over the last 25 years I have become highly proficient in several striking arts (Shotokan, Kyokushin, Kickboxing, Wing Chun), but I have experimented with many other styles. About 15 years ago I began teaching, which prepared me to serve as the president of the OSU Shotokan Club for 2 years and in China I had several students who I taught individually. Over this period I have competed extensively, winning silver in the AAU Nationals and bronze in the AAU Jr. Olympics. I have a strong background in teaching self-defense and believe in a practical approach to martial training, incorporating tradition and the spirit of karate into practical applications.

I love to learn and teach, finding a great thrill in helping people develop their skills and realize their potential. Whether you're a beginner or advanced in Chinese, MS Excel, or martial arts/self-defense it would be my pleasure to assist you in strengthening your abilities.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I have received a B.A and M.A in Chinese Language and Culture from The Ohio State University. While there, I used the performed pedagogy approach to teach beginning Mandarin to Ohio high school students as part of the K-12 Distance Chinese Program. To graduate, I used Mandarin to write my masters thesis and complete a two-hour thesis defense. I spent five years living in China as well. My first two years abroad were spent as a student in Qingdao University and Nanjing University. In addition, I was selected to serve as an intern in the programming department of Hunan International Television Station where I worked in teams to brainstorm new shows, which I participated in, and wrote subtitles.

Martial Arts

I have been an avid martial arts practitioner for the last 25 years. In my youth, I competed regularly and accumulated a high number of podium finishes at various state and national events. My competitive career culminated with silver in the AAU Nationals and bronze in the AAU Jr. Olympics. Over the last 15 years I have taken great joy in teaching as part of my practice. When I went to college I became president of the Shotokan Karate Club, continuing to train and teach. During and after college I frequently worked with individuals 1-on-1 to meet their training objectives, which vary from self-defense, to MMA, to fitness, discipline and confidence building. I hold black belts in Shotokan and Kyokushin karate and am highly experienced in kickboxing. I also have advanced training in judo, jiu-jitsu and Wing Chun kung fu.

Microsoft Excel

I have used Excel extensively as both a consultant and professional. Typically I have analyzed large data sets, examined databases, conducted financial analysis or built business model simulations. I have also used it for more "fun" projects, such as an international GPA conversion tool.
