About Holly

I recently graduated from Cedarville University, and I am now a proud first grade teacher. I am a firm believer that children don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. I strive to form authentic relationships with students, assisting them in achieving their greatest academic potential.
Throughout college, I tutored students in grades K-5. I am a very patient and understanding tutor. I believe each child learns in his or her own unique way, and I will teach in the way your child learns best. I have a variety of learning resources and tools that will enhance the tutoring sessions because I believe that learning should be fun and engaging. I am excited to help your child achieve his or her true potential!

I have helped several students improve their grades in school, but more importantly, I have helped students to feel confident in their academic abilities. I believe each child learns in his or her own unique way, and it is the adult's responsibility to provide instruction through a variety of styles (kinesthetic, auditory, visual) in order to meet the child's academic needs.

I will begin each lesson with a brief discussion of the desired outcome of the lesson (ex. "I will be able to read 3-4 letter words with short vowel sounds"). This ensures that your child is an active participant in the learning process. I follow the Model-Guide-Independent approach. I will model the learning task, I will guide the child through the learning task, and, when ready, he or she will perform the learning task independently.
I provide students with opportunities to improve their reading skills through phonics instruction, sight words practice, read-alouds, Dolch fluency practice, and engaging comprehension lessons. I will help your child develop phonemic awareness through songs, chants, and authentic exposure in fiction and non-fiction books. I have many songs, dances, and chants to help a child become a proficient reader and speller. I follow the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approach to math. When teaching a math skill or strategy to a child, we will begin in the "concrete stage". For example, if your child is learning to add single digit numbers (5+4), we would start by using manipulatives, such as counting bears or cubes, and we would count and 5, and then 4 more. This ensures that your child is not simply memorizing concepts in math, but is developing an authentic understanding. In the next step (the pictorial stage), your child would use pictures or other visual representations to represent a math concept. Using the example above, your child would draw 5 circles and then 4 more circles. When your child shows a deep understanding of the math concept, we would enter the abstract stage. Essentially, this means your child is able to use mental math without any concrete materials or pictures. Following the example of 5+4, your child would know the answer is 9, without using his or her fingers, any concrete materials, or drawing any illustrations.

I am an educator who will truly care about the success of your child!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Huge blessing

Holly has been a wonderful tutor for my son over the last few weeks. My son enjoys his time with her and is showing great progress. His confidence is building in recognizing his letters and there sounds. Holly's enthusiasm and knowledge make her an incredible tutor. We will continue Adam's tutoring with her.
