I discovered design while working my first full-time position at the University of Kentucky. I learned page layout software and design theory on the job while taking free classes from the design department. I fell in love with arranging text and graphics and typography and have been expressing this love ever since.
I have worked as a designer and as a production manager, specializing in both the front end aesthetic approach and the back-end technical issues. I was a production manager for an Advertising company and a layout artist and team leader for a Corporation, creating textbooks for all the top publishers. I traveled to many of these companies to train them in the layout techniques used in our department. It was taking the lead on this training that led me to think of teaching.
I have 16+ years of experience in teaching college-level computer basics and design-related applications. I am an experienced designer and fine artist. This translates into my ability to tutor for 2D Graphic Design Fundamentals, Publication Design and Layout, Logos and self-promotion, Typography, Drawing, Traditional Printmaking and more.
I am thrilled at the opportunity to work with you one-on-one. I am committed to see you realize your potential and achieve your dreams. I look forward to hearing from you! I have taught Adobe InDesign at the college level since it was released by Adobe to compete with QuarkXPress. I have been a publication-design professional since 1988. I have taught basic web classes at the college level for Sinclair Community College and the Art Institute of Ohio, Cincinnati. I have developed materials to teach basic HTML and basic CSS. Though I do not do advanced scripting, I can edit code included in template sites.
I began my career in design in 1988, three years after the term, desktop publishing, became popularized. Starting with Aldus (Adobe) Pagemaker, continuing with QuarkXPress and finally, Adobe InDesign, I have specialized in page layout skills throughout my career. I have worked in the textbook industry, creating books for such clients as Harcourt-Brace, Cengage, McMillan, Prentice-Hall, and others. I have been teaching page layout skills to my college students since 2000.
I am a fine artist and have taken all the drawing classes available in the Sinclair art program. I am proficient in contour drawing and especially value drawing. I can teach perspective.
I have been a graphic design instructor since 2000 when I was hired to teach full-time at the Ohio Institute of Photography and Technology. I distinguished myself in this area in curriculum development for design and multimedia majors. I have been working as a designer and production artist since the late 1980's. Recently, my husband and I began a venture where we are designing and publishing tabletop board games.
I have been using Macs since the 1980s when they first appeared on the market. I have a great understanding of OSX and can troubleshoot issues and set preferences for maximum productivity. I currently teach basic Mac and design apps for Sinclair.
My experience in this area covers modern interfaces and usability. I have basic knowledge in HTML and CSS. I tend to use templates and online web builders these days and can help students navigate these methods of creating websites.
