About Elizabeth

A little bit about myself:

I am a mother of two children on opposite ends of the spectrum of needs. My daughter is gifted and skipped second grade, while my son has severe physical disabilities that require assistance for everything in his life. These two are the reason that I returned to graduate school for my masters in special education for moderate to intensive needs.

Prior to returning to school, I was a stay at home/homeschooling mom during the day and math adjunct at WSU in the evenings. During the seven years at WSU, I taught Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Accelerated College Algebra, Mathematics and the Modern World, and Quantitative Reasoning.

I have held two positions as an Intervention Specialist: One teaching math to middle and high school students with Emotional Disturbance, ADHD, and Aspergers; the other teaching all subjects to Kindergarten through 3rd grade with moderate to severe needs. I recently resigned from my position to return home with my children and homeschool both of them as a result of changing medical needs.

I am available to meet during the day or early evening in my home, local places or online. I can tutor, teach specific subjects for homeschooling, and administer homeschooling assessments.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

After completing my masters in special education, I have had two years of experience teaching students with special needs. Those with ADD/ADHD require activities to be more hands on, with little distractions elsewhere. They also need frequent breaks to help refocus their brain.

Common Core

During my masters program, we have extensively studied the Common Core Standards and Extended Standards. This helped me realize the need for CCS-based books as I searched for textbooks for my classroom. The NCTM conference I attended also offered a lot of training this past fall relating to the CCS.

Elementary (K-6th)

My certification is K-12. I have taught all subjects for K-5 in the classroom and while homeschooling. My classroom experience was in the Huber Heights City School District at Valley Forge Elementary. And I have completed a master's degree in education.

Homeschool

I have earned a degree in education, which qualifies me to currently homeschool my 1st and 5th grade children. My daughter uses a hybrid of online materials with traditional homeschooling activities. My son requires all hands on activities, though he loves the reinforcing games on ABC Mouse. All kids are different and will require different materials and ways of teaching. My special ed background helps with this, too.

Special Needs

Besides having both children within the special needs realm (gifted and severe physical needs) in my classroom, I also am currently completing my student teaching for Special Education. This is being accomplished within my own classroom for students with Emotional Disturbance, ADHD and Aspergers. I will graduate May 2, 2015.

Study Skills

During my graduate studies, we focused on how to assist students, especially students with varying needs, in ways of studying and staying organized. These are not things that come naturally; they need to be specifically taught to each student. It is often helpful to have a visual schedule or a list of what to do in order to study.
