I know how stressful the college application process & entrance exams can be because I've taught Honors English, AP Language and Comp, and general Language Arts to high school seniors for many years. As a recently retired teacher, I can take some of the uncertainty off of your shoulders by:

- teaching the content you need for the redesigned PSAT/NMSQT and SAT tests (effective Spring, 2016)
- coaching ACT Reading and Writing skills
- giving you test-taking strategies that will help you perform more confidently
- practicing approaches for the redesigned essay portion of the ACT/SAT (effective Spring, 2016)

During the college application season, I can help with the many different essay and short answer prompts required on the Common Application, individual college applications, and scholarship opportunities. It really does make a difference when you have someone in addition to your classroom teacher help you organize and manage your applications and essays.

Parents, if you can feel the pressure building over your junior or senior's future, I truly can help. I love high school kids and will champion their success with encouragement and all the resources available.

ACT English,

ACT English

Before retiring, I taught English to seniors at all levels, from AP to remedial. This included many classes devoted to ACT/SAT test preparation. Since designing my ACT Boot Camp, though, I have taken a new approach to tutoring for the tests, and it works so well at improving both confidence and skill. I have looked at materials from the major test-prep companies and put together a program of best practices that should be beneficial on whatever level your student is testing.

SAT Writing,

SAT Writing

The new SAT essay requires students to analyze an argument. This requires the same coaching as the Advanced Placement Language and Composition exam requires. I taught AP Language and Comp for the last four years of my teaching, and am well versed and able to tutor this type of writing. In order to teach this class, one has to take rigorous AP training, which I have had. In addition to the SAT essay, the Writing and Grammar section of the SAT are also in my qualifications for tutoring in my top subjects and former teaching field.

PSAT,

PSAT

Coaching the PSAT and NMSQT requires specific skill in teaching evidence-based Reading and response. These skills are similar to those taught in AP Language and Composition, a course I love and taught for several years. I have tutored two students to being named as National Merit Scholar finalists, and two others who missed that qualification by only a few points. These students came into tutoring with exceptional math and science skills; I was excited and happy to help bring their Reading and Writing skills up to a matching level.

Knowledgeable and Supportive Tutor ACT prep

Phyllis has really connected with our son and has helped him discover his potential. He has worked with her on ACT prep. She inspires him to face the challenges and overcome them with commitment and persistence. Phyllis is flexible in her schedule and knowledgeable about the subject matter. She is organized and easy to approach which is important for our son. She has made an effort to get to know our son, his strengths and his weaknesses and work within those parameters to find his best work. Phyllis regularly communicates with us as parents and informs us about our child’s accomplishments for the session. We highly recommend Phyllis without reservation to help prepare your child.

just what we needed

My daughter Jessica gave wonderful reviews after her initial meet. Kept taking about how they had a lot in common and how Phyllis really knew her stuff. Personally I really appreciated the personal touch of getting to know my daughter. Thanks for the great start! I'm sure you will be a huge asset to Jessica.

Great tutor for the SAT/ACT/PSAT

Phyllis is a great teacher for a high school student. She is patient and works with a child in her ability as well as being flexible in her schedule. My daughter truly enjoyed studying with her and was interested to keep up with the homework she gave. Phyllis is organized and easy to approach which was important for my daughter. I would highly recommend Phyllis without reservation to teach and prepare your child. Thanks.

Excellent tutoring in a short amount of time, for the Reading and English sections of the ACT!

From student: Ms. Phyllis helped me prepare for the ACT, two weeks before each test. In this time period, my understanding of English and Reading concepts improved greatly. Through ACT materials given by Ms. Phyllis and ACT materials I already had, Ms. Phyllis guided me through all aspects of the English and Reading sections of the test. Ms. Phyllis' effort resulted in an increase of 4 points in the Reading section and an increase of 9 points in the English section. I was very happy!

She made English study more interesting to my son who is always a science guy at school.

Phyllis has worked with my son since last summer. Since then, I see a significant improvement in his school work and test results for the PSAT. More importantly, she made English more fun to learn and my son more motivated to study, which will benefit him for life!
