About Phyllis

I know how stressful the college application process can be because I've taught Honors English, AP Language and Comp, and general Language Arts to high school seniors for many years. As a recently retired teacher, I can take some of the uncertainty off of your shoulders by:

- teaching the content you need for the redesigned PSAT/NMSQT and SAT tests (effective Spring, 2016)
- coaching ACT Reading and Writing skills
- giving you test-taking stategies that will help you perform more confidently
- practicing approaches for the redesigned essay portion of the ACT/SAT (effective Spring, 2016)

During the college application season, I can help with the many different essay and short answer prompts required on the Common Application, individual college applications, and scholarship opportunities. It really does make a difference when you have someone in addition to your classroom teacher help you organize and manage your applications and essays.

Parents, if you can feel the pressure building over your junior or senior's future, I truly can help. I love high school kids and will champion their success with encouragement and all the resources available.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

Before retiring, I taught English to seniors at all levels, from AP to remedial.
This included many classes devoted to ACT/SAT test preparation.

Since designing my ACT Boot Camp, though, I have taken a new approach to tutoring for the tests, and it works so well at improving both confidence and skill. I have looked at materials from the major test-prep companies and put together a program of best practices that should be beneficial on whatever level your student is testing.

SAT Writing

The new SAT essay requires students to analyze an argument. This requires the same coaching as the Advanced Placement Language and Composition exam requires. I taught AP Language and Comp for the last four years of my teaching, and am well versed and able to tutor this type of writing. In order to teach this class, one has to take rigorous AP training, which I have had.

In addition to the SAT essay, the Writing and Grammar section of the SAT are also in my qualifications for tutoring in my top subjects and former teaching field.

Great tutor for the SAT/ACT/PSAT — Phyllis is a great teacher for a high school student. She is patient and works with a child in her ability as well as being flexible in her schedule. My daughter truly enjoyed studying with her and was interested to keep up with the homework she gave. Phyllis is organized and easy to approach which was important for my daughter. I would highly recommend Phyllis without reservation to teach and pre ...
