Hi. I taught in the Chicago Public Schools for over 30 years. I don't miss the large class sizes or the administrative challenges, but I do miss the kids. I enjoy tutoring because I love helping children discover the continuous joy inherent in learning. I have found that kids easily feel comfortable with me and that even reluctant learners will soon begin to explore new strategies. As a calm, unassuming encourager, I help children build on their strengths. Together we recognize and celebrate each step that leads to learning new information and mastering new skills.
Most of my experience has been with children ages three to seven, but I have also worked with older students. Not all children process information in the same way and I have always enjoyed the challenge of trying to see the world through their eyes. There are foundational skills that children need for school success. Some of these are number and spatial awareness, letter recognition, decoding skills, and good study and listening habits. The most important cornerstone for success in school, though, is a child's sense of self-worth. Children will continue to put forth effort when they experience success. I focus on building and maintaining a solid foundation of skills and confidence by presenting developmentally appropriate incremental skill building activities. Hi. My daughters are always very excited to work with Susan. She is very kind, patient and makes learning fun!
Our daughter suffers from anxiety and has problems meeting/trusting new people. Susan was very patient, warm, and positive towards our daughter's efforts in playing her flute. After our daughter's lesson was over, she stated that she couldn't wait until her next lesson with Susan!
Our child enjoyed his meeting with Susan. We appreciate the feedback we received after their encounter. We will keep her information in case we need her in the future.
My daughter enjoys her time with Sue. She looks forward to meeting with her and seems to be responding well to the fun learning experience Sue creates for her.
Sue is a wonderful person and very kind. She is very knowledgeable in what it will take for my son to learn. I look forward to working with her and watching him blossom. She took the time to work with him and see where his strengths and weaknesses were as well as explaining it all to us. Very easy to talk with and very kind. If you are in her area, she is THE tutor to have.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My graduate degree was in special education and in my years of teaching I worked with a number of students with ADD/ADHD.
I found that my graduate training in teaching children with learning disabilities was extremely helpful and applicable to working with children who have Aspergers.
In my early childhood non-categorical special education classes, I worked with children on the Autism spectrum. My background in teaching children with learning disabilities gave me some tools that were helpful.
I have a master's degree in special education with an emphasis on teaching children with learning disabilities. I taught early childhood special education classes and a self-contained class of 4th-6th grade children with severe learning disabilities.
In over three decades with the Chicago Public School system, I taught preschool, kindergarten, grades 1 and 2, as well as special education classes for 4th-6th grade. I had Illinois teaching certificates for elementary and special education.
I have taught math to children from ages three to fifteen and have used many different programs and approaches. Because math is essentially about patterns, sequencing, and logical reasoning, I like to use manipulative and interactive games whenever possible. These keep learners engaged and invite them to apply math concepts in real world situations.
I am an accomplished flautist with over 50 years of experience playing in bands, orchestras, and chamber ensembles.
I studied piano and flute as a child and have had decades of experience performing with various school and community ensembles. Although I do not have a degree in music, I have devoted a great deal of my life to its study and appreciation.
During my tenure as a Chicago Public School teacher, the emphasis for teaching reading was on phonics. Not only did I teach phonics everyday, I also received numerous hours of professional development training the phonics approach to reading skill development.
I have a Master of Arts Degree in Special Education with an emphasis on teaching children with learning disabilities. I also have extensive experience working with children ages 3 - 12 with a variety of special needs.
I tutored high school students and found the biggest challenge for them was study skills. Being organized and purposeful in one's approach to studying makes a huge difference in the results achieved. I also learned this through personal experience as I took classes later in life. In fact I took a non-credit study skills class, which I found extremely helpful.
