I love working with people! I'm a curious individual, and love learning about whatever my students are writing about, which is part of what makes tutoring students so enjoyable. I enjoy getting to know my students and meeting them at their current skill level to help them make improvements to their writing at all stages of the writing process. I often work on paper organization, brainstorming, research, and proofreading. I work with my students to improve their skills, helping them to recognize their own mistakes and areas for improvement, as opposed to simply copy-editing.
My experience in tutoring began with volunteering as an assistant in English classrooms teaching English and American culture to recent immigrants in Columbus, OH. I volunteered for an academic year as an Oral English Teacher in Hunan, China, teaching large classes of middle school and high school ESL students as an accompaniment to their written English courses. I also really enjoyed working with an elementary school student, encouraging her to practice her English with games and storytelling.
As a Writing Consultant and tutor at American University, I worked with undergraduate and graduate students in one-on-one sessions to improve their academic writing skills for class, as well as assignments for internships (research projects and proposals), and personal statements for graduate school, medical school, and study abroad programs.
I specialize in working with students on ESL/ESOL, English grammar, literature, proofreading, and academic writing. I have a B.A. cum laude in English Literature from Miami University (with a minor in Anthropology) and earned a Teaching English as a Foreign Language Certification for 125 hours of training and 300 hours of classroom teaching in 2010.
I am generally available from 11am to 8pm, for either online or in-person sessions. I look forward to meeting with you for a free consultation to see if we are a good fit! I love working with people! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
