Helping students learn is a joy of mine. My experience involves being a preschool teacher, early intervention teacher, elementary teacher and special education teacher which totals close to 25 years of teaching experience. I have helped many a child learn to read, in fact there were students whose test scores showed they had moved a year ahead of their previous scores. Each of us learn in such a different way and it's important for those teaching us to focus on our strengths to support those areas needing some help.
Tutoring is one of the best ways I've found which helps young children improve skills as it is a one on one situation. It allows for opportunities to learn how the child learns and then plan activities which will help the child learn and become a strong student of learning.
As a teacher I have had the privilege to help many a child learn to read for reading sake and to read for learning sake. The reading for reading sake starts with pre-reading skills such as how to hold a book, looking at a book from front to back, recognizing the difference between letters and numbers, to using what one knows about the sounds of letters and putting it together to read a word and sentences. When the child can read smoothly and shows decoding skills then if they are struggling with reading for learning sake, comprehension there are activities and skills which can be taught to help comprehension.
A child needs to be able to know the sounds (phonemes} of letters as well as the rules for blends, diphthongs etc to learn how to read. My experience as a special education teacher, teacher of first grade, preschool teacher and third grade teacher has given me many tools and plans for helping children learn those beginning steps to reading. I have worked with students whose reading scores have shown a year increase in ability.
Much of my teaching experience has been as a special education teacher or intervention teacher/tutor. Helping children learn and apply spelling rules has been involved in helping the children learn how to spell. I have also learned a variety of ways to help students learn to spell and remember how to spell grade appropriate words.
As a student on the journey to learn I love helping others on that same journey. I look forward to meeting with you and discussing more how I can help your child achieve their goals of becoming a strong learner. Helping students learn is a joy of mine. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My qualifications to tutor phonics is met by the years of experience as a special education teacher, elementary teacher and intervention specialist (tutor). I have been able to teach many children phonic skills and thus how to read. When working in a school I had students who, based on test scores, had improved their reading scores by 1 year or more. This past year I have helped my niece, who just graduated from Kindergarten and who is in my custody, improve her reading ability from recognizing letters to reading complete sentences and spelling simple sight words.
As an intervention specialist and special educator I helped many students discover how they learn and then develop plans to use the knowledge to help them study. Also study skills involve learning how to organize your materials for review. This is a skill I have taught many a student.
