Ohio University (Journalism)
Originally from West Virginia, I moved to Columbus, OH for work after graduating from Ohio University with a BS in Journalism. While my professional work is in purchasing, I've worked with children in several part time jobs in the past and tutored throughout my time at OU. I love reading and writing, and the opportunity to generate some extra income by helping students improve their reading comprehension and possibly develop an appreciation for the written word is such an exciting prospect. Also, there is no more rewarding experience, in my opinion, than being able to help a student develop self sufficient study habits and critical thinking skills that will serve them throughout their lives.
I believe that patience and attention to individual learning styles are paramount to creating an enjoyable, yet instructive learning environment. Many students simply need some one on one instruction to break down concepts and better understand the process behind certain projects, be it writing a book review or solving a math problem. While English and writing made up quite a bit of my coursework, I also received a varied general education in math, science and history, subjects which I also tutored students in at the university level.
I have a journalism degree from Ohio University and was employed as a student tutor during all four years. I tutored students taking classes in a variety of fields, including English, creative writing, biology, statistics and history. In addition to tutoring, I also proofread students' papers, dissertations and resumes for extra income.
Helping others learn is a passion of mine, and I look forward to the opportunity to help students of all ages improve in subject areas of their choice. My scheduling hours are flexible in the evening and students can feel free to contact me with questions outside of our tutoring sessions. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have experience playing in concert, marching and jazz ensemble settings and have achieved All-Area, All-County (Cabell County in WV) and All-State distinctions in tenor saxophone.

I've attended the Jazz-Mu-Tazz camp organized annually by Marshall University as well as Morehead State University's annual jazz camp.
I specialize teaching in alto, tenor and baritone saxophone in the areas of playing (fingerings, embouchure, tonality) and music reading.
