The Ohio State University (English)
I have a Bachelor's degree in English from THE Ohio State University. I've always loved learning, especially when it related to literature. Reading, writing, and grammar have come easily to me for as long as I can remember. My home is filled with books and I'm forever buying more!
I have worked in a preschool, taught with a theatre company since 2011, and have 3 children of my own; one of whom has encountered significant reading struggles. In the preschool, the kids are all under 6. In the theatre company, the kids are between 6 and 18. What I love most about teaching, for any age range, is when I see something "click". I have taught in large class settings and one on one. Regardless of class size, I love that moment when something is accomplished. I like to take the time and tackle the challenge of something that is holding a student back. One of my favorite teaching moments was when I had a kid who was brand new to the theatre. I'm an old theatre nerd myself so it's refreshing to see new interest. The wonder in their eyes reminds me why I love what I do. This boy, though, was terrified of people hearing him. He didn't have the confidence to deliver his lines audibly. We tried many different methods, games, etc to break him out of his shell, but finally there was one thing that worked. I had him cover his mouth and close his eyes then deliver his lines at the top of his voice. Once he felt the difference in his throat and chest, realized it was nothing to be afraid of, he got more comfortable projecting his words. By performance time, he didn't even need a microphone!
I'm specifically qualified as an English tutor because that's my passion. It's what I've pursued for years in various traditional and non-traditional forms. I have my formal education and good test scores, but I also have my own pursuits like theatre and informal seminars that I love to attend.
I'd love to hear from you and work together on making literature fun! I have a Bachelor's degree in English from THE Ohio State University. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am an English major receiving my B.A. as of December.
