About Heather

I recently graduated with my Master’s in Biology. As a graduate student I chose to become a teaching assistant and found that I thoroughly enjoyed teaching. Throughout the 10 semesters I taught, I have worked with all college age groups and backgrounds, from freshmen biology majors to non-traditional students earning a second degree in a different field. I enjoy working one-on-one and providing personal attention to students who are interested in biology and those who are non-biology students, but want a better understanding of biology.

I am a strong believer in teaching students how to think and not what to think. I encourage students to learn the material and retain it, versus sheer memorization. I am flexible in my tutoring approach and gear it towards the student’s learning style. I have found that making biology or any related topic interesting and/or funny is one of the best approaches because learning should be fun.

I like to check students’ understanding during a session to ensure they are gaining a better grasp of the material. And I can provide study tips for tests and how to reduce test anxiety. After each session, I like to receive feedback to make sure the student is making progress, and discuss goals for the next session.

I have taught Human Anatomy & Physiology I, Human Anatomy & Physiology II and non-majors’ biology laboratories, and I have assisted with microbiology laboratory. I have been invited to different schools to present ecology-related topics for both college level students and younger. I have extensive coursework experience in anatomy, ecology, physiology, and zoology. I am also an Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist.

I look forward to helping you meet your personal and academic goals. Please feel free to contact me about any questions you may have about my tutoring approach, experience, or something else about biology!

"Excellent tutor"

- Durenda, Sunbury, OH on 3/23/16

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

I have taught human anatomy and physiology I and II laboratories. I have taken courses examining the anatomy of humans along with many invertebrates and vertebrates. I have also performed numerous necropsies, and have examined cadavers.

Biology

As a biology major in both undergrad and graduate school, this is my area of expertise. Both of my degrees are in biology and I have studied numerous topics within biology. I have also taught different laboratories that reflect this - from non-major's biology to human anatomy and physiology (I and II).

Ecology

I have extensive experience in the laboratory and in the field with ecology-related topics from invasive species and conservation practices to tree identification. Additionally, a lot of the research I have been involved in has been ecological - from examining ecotoxicological data to my own theses with amphibians. I have taught ecology concepts in laboratories and I have also studied ecology extensively during undergrad and graduate school.

Nutrition

I have assisted students in creating, keeping, and analyzing food logs. I have taught subjects such as human anatomy and physiology, which covered nutritional requirements/recommendations, and food allergy testing. I [have and] currently tutor science of food, science of human nutrition, and other nutrition-related courses at a university. Furthermore, I also have experience in animal nutrition, as a part of my training for pet store management, with a focus on mammals (e.g. rabbits, cats, dogs), and as a former 4-H member who showed animals for nine years.

Physiology

I have taught human anatomy and physiology I and II laboratories. I have taken courses examining and comparing the physiology of invertebrates and vertebrates (humans included). I have also studied behavioral endocrinology.

Zoology

I have taken mammalogy, herpetology, marine mammals, and an Independent study with ornithology. I have necropsied vertebrates, can identify different vertebrates by skulls, skins, and specimens. I have curated specimens - both invertebrate and vertebrate. I can also identify animals by calls and tracks. I have studied conservation, distribution, and classification of most phyla.

Excellent tutor — Heather is working with my daughter for her high school biology class. She is a very conscientious and organized teacher. She has helped my daughter to understand concepts that she was not learning in her classroom work. I would highly recommend Heather for anyone looking for an outstanding tutor. ...
