Experienced Biology Instructor and Tutor
I recently graduated with my Master’s in Biology. As a graduate student I chose to become a teaching assistant and found that I thoroughly enjoyed teaching. Throughout the 10 semesters I taught, I have worked with all college age groups and backgrounds, from freshmen biology majors to non-traditional students earning a second degree in a different field. I enjoy working one-on-one and providing personal attention to students who are interested in biology and those who are non-biology...
I enjoy working one-on-one and providing personal attention to students who are interested in biology and those who are non-biology students, but want a better understanding of biology.
I am a strong believer in teaching students how to think and not what to think. I encourage students to learn the material and retain it, versus sheer memorization. I am flexible in my tutoring approach and gear it towards the student’s learning style. I have found that making biology or any related topic interesting and/or funny is one of the best approaches because learning should be fun.
I like to check students’ understanding during a session to ensure they are gaining a better grasp of the material. And I can provide study tips for tests and how to reduce test anxiety. After each session, I like to receive feedback to make sure the student is making progress, and discuss goals for the next session.
I have taught Human Anatomy & Physiology I, Human Anatomy & Physiology II and non-majors’ biology laboratories, and I have assisted with microbiology laboratory. I have been invited to different schools to present ecology-related topics for both college level students and younger. I have extensive coursework experience in anatomy, ecology, physiology, and zoology. I am also an Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist.
I look forward to helping you meet your personal and academic goals. Please feel free to contact me about any questions you may have about my tutoring approach, experience, or something else about biology!
Knowledgeable tutor with excellent study skills strategies.
Heather helped me establish some good study skills and worked with me on content review. She doesn't "teach" the material, she worked with me as I explained what I knew and helped me find solutions and develop study strategies for what I didn't know. Looking forward to our next tutoring session.Megan, 2 lessons with Heather
