About Lauren

I have been teaching for the past four years, but have been tutoring and working with students for the past 9 years. I have a Master's degree in Education and am working on another Master's in Biology and Outdoor Education. I have taught, mentored and coached all ages and skill levels and love to share my passion and help others learn, especially when it is difficult. I specialize in working with students with disabilities and have won multiple state and national teaching awards. I will be attending The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law this fall, specializing in education law and special education. In my free time, I enjoy hiking, skiing, biking, swimming, reading, traveling, cooking and spending time with my husband and two golden retrievers.

I am certified to teach all ages 0-21 and certified in elementary education, special education and career and technical education. I have experience tutoring all ages, specifically working with elementary education and curriculums.

My background is in special education and I've been a multi-intensive special education teacher, with experience working with students with all types of special needs including, ADD/ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Downs Syndrome, and students with behavioral needs and cognitive disabilities. I have completed a masters degree in education, with a focus in urban education and special education and have won multiple state and national teaching awards.

My passion and specialty is helping struggling students to succeed. I will be in law school at Ohio State so will have a pretty flexible schedule for after-school or weekend tutoring.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I am a certified special education teacher and have been teaching multi-intensive special education for the past four years. I have a Master's degree in Education, focusing on special education. I have taken multiple classes specially geared toward supporting students on the Autism spectrum and have significant experience teaching and tutoring students with autism (from kindergarten to high school). Over the years, I have continued to take classes and trainings on Autism and have many strategies specifically for students with Autism to help them learn in and outside of the classroom. I have been a certified ABA therapist as well to directly support the needs of students on the Autism spectrum and am a part of two nonprofits that are dedicated to helping parents and students with Autism learn more about the disability and help them succeed.

Basketball

I have been playing basketball for over 17 years and have been coaching for over 10 years. I have coached and taught all ages from 2nd grade through high school varsity. I also played basketball in college and took our high school team to the state tournament for the first time in the school's history.

Common Core

I have been teaching common core for the past few years and have created curriculum around common core as well. Additionally, I have been a part of multiple professional development groups creating this curriculum and assessments that align with common core and have taught multiple subject areas using the common core standards. As an educator, I have also attended conferences and trainings in order to be well suited to teach and support the common core standards as a teacher and tutor.

Cooking

I have taught cooking to high school students for four years. I created lessons, unit plans, and curriculum for students of all abilities with safety as the first priority.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified special education teacher with a certification in elementary education as well. I have passed the elementary Praxis exam and have taught all ages from kindergarten to high school but have recently been tutoring multiple 4th- and 5th-grade students. My specialties include elementary mathematics, reading, and writing and organizational skills.

Golf

I played golf in high school and in college. I was the Captain of the Women's Golf Team at Denison University my senior year.

Lacrosse

I played lacrosse in high school, was captain of the team and have won multiple awards in the sport.

Special Needs

I am a certified special education teacher and have been teaching multi-intensive special education for the past four years. I have significant experience teaching and tutoring students of all ages with differing special needs. I have created lessons, curriculum and assessments for all subject areas for students with special needs. Additionally, I have a masters degree in education with many courses taken in special education and have won multiple teaching awards for special educators.

Study Skills

I have taught specific classes on study skills for students in high school and worked collaboratively with the guidance counselors to help create curriculum for the class that aligned with college readiness so students have the skills needed to succeed in college. Additionally, I've tutored multiple students that needed help with study skills and organization in order to improve their learning and grades and found success using SOAR study skills as well as developing note catcher templates, using student planners, and creating a learning plan and syllabus to help to empower students to take the study skills and strategies I've taught and use them independently with confidence.

Swimming

I have been a swimmer for over 22 years and have coached swimming.

Volleyball

I have played and coached volleyball for years and have also been a referee.
