About Andrea

I always loved to travel and have been to about 16 countries, and lived for at least 1 year in four different ones. I was born and raised in Germany and came to the US to continue my graduate studies in biological anthropology. I absolutely love learning and enjoy helping others to enjoy it too. It intrigues me that each language does not only consist of words and grammar, but it also carries a country's heritage and culture.

Biology and anthropology help me understand the world. Everything is touched and based on these two sciences. Well, if you talk to a chemist or mathematician, you will probably hear the same. But believe me, I am right. At any rate, there is no reason not to enjoy these subjects. Let me help you.

I LOVE biology and anthropology! After I received my interdisciplinary MA in Biological Anthropology and Zoology from The Ohio State University, I continued taking coursework towards my PhD (never finished though). I spent over a year studying proboscis monkey ecology in Indonesian Borneo with Birute Galdikas, the famous orangutan researcher as my mentor.

I used to teach my own sections of Anthropology as Graduate Teaching Associate at The Ohio State University. I have also taught biological Anthropology at Columbus State Community College.

Although I started learning English at age eleven, it was very difficult at first. I struggled for years, until I spent a year in Toronto, Canada, after high school. During the ESL course I attended with a number of adults from other countries, I experienced a breakthrough. English suddenly "made sense" to me. Now, I am living it every day and it seems so easy. But I remember my initial struggles and observe them in many international students with whom I frequently interact in my job. If I can learn English, everybody can! And I can help you to get there!

I was born in Germany and spent the first 25 years of my life there. I visit my family in Germany at least once a year and like to stay in touch with all things German. I used to tutor children, young adults, and adults in German.

If you need help with German, Biology, or Anthropology, please contact me. I promise you will learn and enjoy the process.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have an MA in Anthropology and have fulfilled all additional course work for a PhD. I used to teach my own sections of Anthropology as a Graduate Teaching Associate at University. I completed almost one and a half years of field research on the ecology of proboscis monkeys in Indonesian Borneo for my PhD (which I never completed). I have also taught biological Anthropology at a Community College.

German

I am a native speaker of German and still speak it every week and go back to Germany at least once a year.

Knowledgeable and Welcoming

My son thoroughly enjoyed his first tutoring session w/Andrea. She helped him understand difficult concepts in a very short amount of time. We look forward to working w/her in the future.
