About Jay

Dear Students and Parents, My name is Jay O., and I am a Music Technology Specialist and Tutor. I currently hold a Bachelor of Music Degree in Music Technology from Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. Throughout my collegiate and professional career, I have studied various types of compositional writing styles in the fields of: Music Production, Electronic Composition, and Contemporary Song-Writing. As a Music Technology specialist and tutor, I strive to present my students with tools that will help them develop their own individual skill sets as future producers. My goal, as a tutor, is to provide my students with fundamental skills necessary to pursue their musical goals.

Professionally, I have worked with musicians from Los Angeles, Nashville and Milwaukee, as well as locally in Columbus. I have worked with a wide range of artists, including "The Voice" singer Chris Jamison, and country music legend, Lynn Anderson. My experiences span other demographics, including MG Design, Parlor Productions and Capital University. The diversity of my background gives me the opportunity to share a wide variety of techniques and styles with my students. I hope to be able to help my students become the best they can be at whatever there chosen path in the music industry may be.

Thank your time. I look forward to working with you and your student in the future.

Sincerely,
Jay O.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have been a student of composition for eight years. I am an extremely prolific and have written pieces in styles ranging from classical to EDM. My approach to composition is that of a craftsman; I will help my students learn time management and work techniques as well as compositional techniques. Finally I believe that composition can be approached many different ways and will help to encourage the approach that works best for my students.

Music Production

I have 8 years of music production experience. In my past projects, I have worked directly with artists, musicians and mix engineers, as well as produced my own music. I believe that as a producer, you must wear many hats. The producer is often called upon to do many different jobs and the best producers can do them all and do them all well. I strive to help my students be well rounded and help prepare them for the world of music production.

Songwriting

I have had success in both commercial and vocal songwriting. I have worked with artists such as Chris Jamison and Spencer Saylor and helped them in the songwriting and production process. In addition to working with artists, I have found success writing music beds for various song libraries.

Violin

I have been playing violin for almost 18 years now. I have played in various different major orchestras and ensembles. I now play violin alongside members of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. I strive to help my students learn the fundamentals and build upon what they already know in order to become an all around better violinist.
