About Fred

I am currently employed as a Test Engineer. (We fix anything electronic).

I taught computer technology and tutored students in Math, Science, Music, and English on a remote (Fly-In) Indian Reserve in Northern Canada. This was one of the most fun and rewarding experiences I have had...I have also done online training. I ran an online computer training lab.

I train different people where I currently work, a position I've held for 14 years. I am also a technical writer, and my understanding of the English language, composition, grammar, reading, and the written word are all important to me. I love music...composition, playing (several instruments)...and enjoy listening and evaluating all types of music. I have played guitar, harmonica, bass, and trombone for many years. I have been in a couple of bands over the years...My whole family is musical!

If you are struggling, for whatever reason...fear not! There is always a way to better understand different subjects, and different interests you might have.

I sincerely believe that learning any subject can be interesting, fun and pays off...if you just follow a few simple guidelines...
Life is short...might as well learn some things that will help you enjoy it along the road!

I am willing to research, share knowledge, and provide some tools that would really assist in your goals. This just takes a little time, and a little effort.

All the best to you and your endeavors! Fred H.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I initially learned trombone in 4th grade (and site reading bass clef). I started playing guitar, bass guitar, and harmonica when I was about 13 years old and have been in several bands. I have been playing for 40+ years and know chord theory and composition. I have taken music theory and composition lessons from several very qualified individuals (one in particular who was a master guitarist from Berkley at Boston).
I played in the marching band, and the jazz band all the way through Jr. High and High School. My whole family plays, and 2 of 3 siblings are professional musicians. (Symphony / Jazz / Pop). I have organized and lead a choir / chorus, for middle school teachers and children. Basically, I love music in its many forms and guitar has been my main instrument for many years. I can play blues, rock, jazz standards, R&B, soul, and Pop. I have no problem teaching both young and older students chords, theory, rhythm, composition...and we always have a lot of fun doing it! We can tackle just about anything you want to learn...

Microsoft Windows

I have taken many computer classes (Multiple Windows Operating Systems, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, C Programming, Unix, BASIC etc.). I also worked on Mainframe program development systems.
I owned a business repairing computers for several years. I have had to work with DOS, Windows 3.0, 3.11 for Workgroups, Windows 95, Windows ME, Windows 98, Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and have recently started researching Windows 10. I have watched the evolution and the GUI changes over the years.
I use various Windows systems at work and at home every day. I ran the online learning computer lab at a HS in Canada and tutored students is computer applications including Windows, and associated applications.

Study Skills

As a Site Teacher and Online Computer Lab Facilitator, I taught Jr. High, and H.S. students and tutored in many subjects. Study Skills are paramount to student comprehension and success in all types of learning.
We found it was very helpful to put a basic study skill on the board each day, and discuss with the students briefly in class. Examples: Review your class notes within 24 hours. Get organized and stay that way. Plan your work and work your plan. Use Flashcards. Ask for help when you need it etc. These discussions help the students to become more aware of tools that they can use (and enjoy). After a short time, they become ingrained and the student benefits from the tools. It is important to exhibit consistency with reinforcing these skills as the benefits become clear in short order.

I began trombone studies in 4th Grade Band. My parents were told (by a very exuberant band director) that I had a natural lip and great tone for my age. Private lessons followed for years. I played 3rd, 2nd, and 1st chair in Band and Dance Band in High School. I was able to take private lessons through High School. I played in the marching band as well. I have subsequently played in a small and fun community band in Maine (summers). I can site read fairly well and have had all the Bass Clef theory.
