I love learning and want to pass that on others! The key to learning any subject is enjoying the process of discovery. In our study sessions we will look at the subject matter to be learned as taking steps on a journey until we reach the end. Learning is best done in a relational setting, that's why I believe it is most effective in a one-to-one or small group setting.
I graduated from the Ohio State University in International Studies and spent 14 years living overseas. I have learned several foreign languages and can help people from other countries learning both formal and conversational English.
I tutor most often ESL, history and preparation for standardized testing. I also enjoy working with elementary school children in all the core subject matters.
My goal is to help you master the skills you want and gain confidence in your ability to learn!

I had a good time at our first lesson. I think it will definitely help me keep my speaking skills up for the summer and look forward to our next meeting.
I appreciate Marianne's endless patience. I enjoy her style of teaching. She helps me repeat the sentences in our pronunciation lesson.
Marianne took the time to understand what my 7th grade daughter needed assistance with and had the patience to work with her on her homework in both German and Math. Marianne was excellent at explaining the work and giving her basic explanations that she could understand. I highly recommend her as a person and as a tutor.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I graduated from college with a degree in International Studies, specifically International Relations. This is history in action! For the past 3 years I have been helping ESL high school students learn American and World history. These lessons include preparation for passing the Ohio Graduation Test.
Over the past 25 years, I have taught and tutored ESL students in a wide range of settings and levels -- large classrooms, small groups and one-on-one; from beginning to advanced and business proficiency levels. I use a wide range of teaching methods which are driven by the student's goals--conversational, academic, written work, proficiency tests, etc.
I studied Russian language for 4 years and lived in Russia for 14 years. I studied both conversational Russian and traditional Russian grammar. Because languages are living and reflect the culture in which they operate, I use a combination of traditional textbook exercises for repetition and current media for active knowledge.
Developing study skills is a combination of the material to be learned, one's learning style and the ability to be organized. I have experience tutoring a variety of subjects with a wide range of students which has led me to develop several creative approaches to learning. I also have passed on some useful organizational habits over the years.
