I have worn many hats in my lifetime. I've been a teacher, a tutor, a grad student, a writer, and even a nanny. I've worked in food services and retail. I always end up back in the role of teacher--a role I truly enjoy. I worked my way through grad school by tutoring writing in the campus Writing Center. I learned many great methods that have helped me as a teacher as well: Don't do the work for the student. I know, I know, life would be so much easier if I just did it for you. But you wouldn't learn anything! And when you have another essay due, you'll be just as stuck and panicked. Don't just proofread. Helping a student edit? No problem. Marking all the errors and not explaining them? Not helpful. Chew gum before tutoring--nobody likes bad breath.
I taught middle school and high school English at a private school in South Carolina for two years. After that my husband and I moved to Columbus, Ohio, and now I am an adjunct instructor of English at Columbus State Community College. I teach introductory and remedial English classes. This was my first experience with WyzAnt and of course I was not sure of the service. But after working with Rebecca I was at ease and knew I had made the correct decision. My project was urgent and Rebecca was there and available for me. She was patient and understood my urgency and got me through my project. Thanks Rebecca for your promptness.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
