As a retired teacher of 30 years, I am looking for a way to reconnect with the best part of teaching--working with students and helping them succeed.
My educational qualifications include a BA in Sociology, Permanent 7-12 Comprehensive Social Studies Certification, Permanent K-12 Reading Certification, a Masters Degree in Reading and a PhD in literacy/writing.
My degrees and certifications show my wide-ranging interests--from social sciences and history to the pleasure and importance of reading to the satisfaction of cogent and expressive writing.
Tutoring is a collaboration between the student and the tutor--both contribute to the sessions. A variety of techniques and activities must be tried, both to decide what works best and to add interest and variety to the learning sessions. In addition, correlation with the student's teachers is necessary to ensure success. Finally, parents should be involved to the degree that they feel is warranted.
I see my role as tutor to help the student achieve agreed-upon goals through varied and interesting sessions where direct instruction is used as needed. While learning involves work, there must be fun, pleasure, and the warm feeling of achievement as well.
