About Keri

I’m excited to be your tutor! I want to tell you a little bit about myself before we begin working together.

I’m originally from Columbus, OH. I’m a Doctoral Teaching Fellow at Ball State University. Prior to beginning my fellowship, I was a teacher and a counselor for nine years at a public high school that I helped design in the South Bronx.

Although I started out as a Spanish teacher, I have taught many subjects and worked as a College and Career Counselor, in addition to wearing several other hats. Currently, I'm pursuing a PhD in Educational Studies. My goal is to research and develop a model of teaching that I created as a teacher and counselor in the South Bronx. I believe that technology can help level the playing field by improving learning outcomes for disadvantaged and struggling students. Eventually, I hope to create a blended school and national training center for blended learning that will serve as a laboratory for innovation and professional development for teachers and researchers, while also providing equitable education that prepares at-risk students to meet the challenges of the 21st Century.

My education background is quite varied. I did my undergraduate work at Cornell University, where I majored in Spanish Literature and minored in Latin American Studies. I have earned two masters degrees--an MA in Curriculum and Educational Technology from Ball State University and an MA in Spanish Education from The City University of New York at Lehman College. I have a Certificate in College Counseling from UCLA and a Diversity Studies Certificate from Ball State University. I also have studied ecology, biology, and many interdisciplinary topics at colleges and universities around the world. You could say that I’m a professional student.

When I'm not working, I love travel, nature, photography, reading non-assigned books and articles, eating yummy food, hanging out in Columbus, spending time with friends in the Big Apple, gardening and hanging out with my dogs, Aristotle and Socrates...yes, I named my dogs after philosophers.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

My teaching background includes working with students at both the K-12 and university levels. I also have a history teaching students with special needs and students learning English as a second language (or third). This experience informs how I work with students, especially middle and high school students, to prepare them for the high expectations set at the college level.

Having published two articles in double-blind, peer-reviewed journals, I use my own experiences as a doctoral student to work with undergraduate and graduate students throughout the entire writing process. I am also well-versed in APA, MLA, and Chicago.

For younger students, I use my background as a language teacher to use phonics, games, and other age- and level-appropriate strategies to help students read and write.

Extremely positive first experience!

Yesterday I met with my tutor, Keri for the first time. She was friendly, punctual and ready to help me make the most out of my first Spanish tutoring session. Keri was able to quickly evaluate my current level and we then discussed my main goal - which is to be able to converse comfortably in Spanish. She made me feel at ease from the minute I met her. I was so pleased with the fact that we spen
