Graduate courses in teaching at Ohio State University (Graduate Coursework)
My love of teaching comes from going to so many different schools in my childhood. After graduating from U.C.L.A., I realized I wanted to be a teacher. I have had a lot of experience in teaching ESOL students, as well as elementary school students. I love learning and try to motivate my students to succeed in their Reading. I do offer homework, as it helps to double check the work they have done in that one or two hour period. It is exciting to see the students learn, understand and improve.
I have taken special classes in teaching Reading to all age groups and was a member of the State of Ohio Board. I also served as a member of the Statewide (Ohio) Reading /Writing Steering Committee, and have taken special training, and trained other teachers of Reading, through the STAR Project.
I do try to be flexible with time. However, while I do have a 24 hour cancellation policy, I offer makeup classes.
To ensure that students have a quiet and comfortable study space in which to work with me, I can tutor in the student’s home or in a local library. However I am happy to travel to another location that is convenient for the student.

Pat is a wonderful tutor, very patient. It was a pleasure to meet her every week. She has a great sense of humor.
I am Elsie, a 34 year old mom of two and my first language is Spanish. I had the great opportunity to take tutoring with Mrs. Pat and I highly recommend her. We met two hours a week for 3 months. In this short period my friends have noticed a big improvement in my English and my confidence in speaking it. Mrs. Pat is very responsible, empathetic, excellent listener, respectful and above all she cares about you and really wants you to learn. She works extra hard to meet all your needs. I am glad to have met Mrs. Pat because she made me believe in myself and her words of encouragement helped me be a better student and never give up. I had to stop my tutorials for now, but I am looking forward to continuing them at the beginning of 2015.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught Reading and Language to GED students.
6 years of teaching ESOL to adult students in Ohio.
1 year of teaching an Advanced and Intermediate Class in Sarasota, Fl.
I have a B.A. degree from U.C.L.A. I have traveled around the world and have always been interested
in international places and people. In my GED classes, I have had both international students and American students, who wanted to increase their Reading in order to pass the GED test.
I have taught phonics to children as well as adults in learning to read. Phonics is very important in learning how to read; in fact, it is the base of our reading. I use phonics cards and worksheets to help students memorize the sounds of words.
I started the first Reading class for pre-GED students and helped them improve their reading scores to above 6th grade level. Part of the reading class also included grammar. Many students who hated reading ended up enjoying reading.
