I am a high school valedictorian and double-degree Ohio State graduate. In addition, I spent a year at Indiana University with a Fellowship in Classics. With a degree in Classics, I am well-versed in grammar and able to teach Latin and Greek. I have worked with students from St. Charles and also offer lessons online with Skype.
With a degree in Music Composition, I am strong at teaching piano, theory, ear training, composition/songwriting, and popular music (especially the British Invasion).
I have a good deal of prior teaching experience. I am often sought out to tutor in Latin, and I know how to teach it effectively. I have helped a student retaking the ACT increase her score. I have also taught piano to grade school, high school, and college students. I currently teach piano lessons on a grand piano at my home studio and also offer guitar, violin, and composition. My compositions have been praised at Ohio State and featured in many Composers' Workshop Concerts. My classical language training gives me a broad scope, from English to Ovid and Plato. My goal in tutoring is to make students passionate about learning. When they tackle a difficult subject, they deserve praise for their progress. I think it is also important for me, as a tutor, to get to know all my students individually and encourage them in their strengths and ambitions.
Over a period of months, I gave a Turkish student a structured education in the English language. This experience has given me the skills necessary for effective ESL tutoring. My knowledge of languages allows me to relate to a student's first language. Also, I explain why a sentence is correct in English instead of saying, "It just sounds right." I am very pleased with Ben as a tutor. His patience was very impressive. He adapted to what my daughter needed. I would recommend him to anyone who has a need for a tutor.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In high school, I excelled in Algebra 1.
I am well-prepared to teach algebra 2. It was a favorite of mine in high school.
I took two years of chemistry in high school, and it was one of my favorite subjects.
I am good at math and patient at teaching it.
Geometry is a subject I can teach very effectively.
My GRE score helped me get a Fellowship at Indiana University.
I started playing the piano when I was five, continued taking lessons into college, and earned a degree in Music Composition. I teach Beginner-Advanced piano lessons and have had students from elementary school through college. I offer lessons on a grand piano at my house.
