In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My qualifications for business instruction and tutoring / consulting are based on the facts that I have over 30 years of experience in various business management functions in both the corporate and the entrepreneurial environment. I started up and continue to run my own business. In this setting I have become well-versed in all of the key functions of the company such as finance and accounting, marketing and sales, information technology, strategic management, human resource management (including strategic health care cost management and containment). While I have an M.B.A. (Ohio University 1988) and the while I gained valuable insight and skill enhancement from it, it pales by comparison to what I have learned in running my own business. Prior to that I spent 20 years in corporate and rose to an Executive Band employee at General Electric (under famed CEO Jack Welch). Aside from the extensive training and exposure to various business settings and situations, the greatest take-away was that I gained a global perspective that becomes more valuable each and every day as the individual economics move closer towards becoming a single global economy. Therefore the sum total of my academic, corporate and entrepreneurial experiences gives me a wealth of knowledge and experience that few ever attain.
I have extensive experience as both a user and a teacher of QuickBooks(r) accounting software that dates back to 1999. My initial experience with QuickBooks was in a real-world application that pertained to my own business. I owned and operated a plastics raw material distribution business that had 8 warehouse locations from Ohio to California. All of my accounting, finance, inventory, and job costing (among other activities) were all performed via QuickBooks. This also included networking the data file between a customer service site in Parkersburg, WV and the corporate office in Columbus, OH.
Later as a business turn-around consultant, I specialized in small firms that were using QuickBooks to manage their operations. What this gave me was more real-world application of the software across various industry segments, including non-profits. It was largely in these type assignments that I developed a higher level of expertise in optimizing the software's capabilities as a management tool for its user.
In recent years I have also become very familiar with QuickBooks POS and have installed it in a bookstore and a restaurant and have written SOP's to make up for some of its retail shortcomings as opposed to other more robust programs. But because of the ease of integrating the financial with QuickBooks Pro or Enterprise Solutions, I still prefer QuickBooks POS to many other POS applications.
Lastly, I have develop a standard training program that walks new user thorough the basics of operating their businesses using QuickBooks. This training also includes a basic overview of business finance and details how things show up on a balance sheet and an income statement (or why they show up). These items combined with my academic training gives me a level of expertise that many others do not yet have.
