I came from Malaysia, somewhere in southeast Asia. It is a small country, but it is rich in culture. My mother tongue is Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), while my national language is Malay, and I graduated with a B.S. of Biochemistry from OSU, so I can speak fluent English as well. Back in our country, we have to learn grammar, write essays and evaluate literature in all three languages (Chinese, Malay and English). You can imagine how much one needs to know about the certain language in order to achieve good grades in essays and literature evaluation. Most Malaysians have very heavy accents, however, according to the students from Hong Kong and mainland China that I met at OSU, none of them can tell my nationality apart from their own. On top of my knowledge, I have experience in teaching Chinese to a few of local Ohioans that I met in school. Since I was brought up in a multi-language environment, I know the method to teach the students so that they can pick up the language with ease.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
