Otterbein University (AYA Math Education)
I have been interested in mathematics as long as I can remember. However, it was in college that my true love started and I have been addicted to the real stuff ever since. I currently have three years of college under my belt from Otterbein University. Those fine years were dedicated to a Bachelor's in Mathematics and Certification to educate Adolescents to Young Adult from grades 7 to 12. I passed the Praxis Learning Test (PLT) as well as the Praxis Mathematics Test in April of 2011. Previous to that, I have spent significant time in the schools as a part-time classroom teacher and a tutor. Overall I have been tutoring for 5 years with great success in helping families achieve the goals they set.
Currently, the greatest need in mathematics is increased critical thinking and problem solving skills; along with the ability to apply these skills to any field of interest or real life task. I teach mathematics by inspiring students to hunger for more, instead of force feeding them facts. I use inspiring examples of authentic mathematics to foster a love and passion that leads to extraordinary results not only in grades, but in the overall student as a whole. One of my most memorable students was a boy who under my instruction achieved a passing grade on the OGT in the last section he had yet to pass, math. From there he went on to graduate and he received a full-ride scholarship to the college of his choice due to his skills in sports.
In my spare time I enjoy traveling, rock climbing, swing dancing, and playing the ancient Chinese game of Go. I've competed in this chess-like game all over the country and even in South Korea and China. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
