I graduated from Pitzer College with a B.A. in chemistry and am currently pursuing my Ph.D. in organic chemistry at The Ohio State University. For my last two years in college, I tutored extensively in introductory and organic chemistry. I quickly became the most popular tutor because of my patience, dedication, and instructional ability. My emphasis was and still is on understanding the fundamental concepts as problem solving naturally follows. Teaching and drilling the “how” of problem solving mechanics are important, but really understanding the “why” that those problems are based on generates the greatest returns, especially for students interested in continuing in the natural sciences.
Furthermore, early tutoring sessions helped many of my students develop self-confidence in the face of seemingly overwhelming course requirements which helped in their overall performance. While not all of them got A’s, those that regularly attended tutoring did see improvements in their grades.
I believe that mathematics should not get in the way of learning the natural sciences, so I am capable of tutoring in that as well. My passion is in chemistry but the quantitative nature of the natural sciences means that I am fluent in algebra through calculus.
By nature of my coursework and extracurricular research, I also have extensive experience in lab work and spent a fair amount of my tutoring time assisting with lab coursework.
I look forward to tutoring for you!
If you've read this far, you're probably serious about wanting tutoring. However, my time is as valuable to me as your time is to you, so here are a few things that you may find helpful:
1. If sending me a message, please make sure to address me by name. Don't accidentally use some other tutor's name or use no name at all. If at the very least, that indicates you probably read my description.
2. I realize that most potential students are reaching out for tutoring because of a current and usually urgent need. However, to make sure that I can best help you, I'm going to respond to your request with questions about what your particular needs are. This may include a request for current specific issues as well as some background information on your desired topic. This helps me to figure out whether or not I am capable of meeting your needs. It is highly unlikely that I will be able to meet the same day of your request.
3. I will usually not agree to schedule a meeting until (2) is answered and I get a chance to talk to the potential student over the phone. The purpose of this is to begin establishing a "good fit" and rapport; I might be a great tutor and you might be a great student, but if we can't work and communicate well together, then it's not going to work out.
4. As a common courtesy, please respond to any of my replies, even if to indicate that you're no longer interesting in tutoring.
5. Avoid sending me requests for help with "chapter 4" or something similarly vague. I probably don't have your textbook and even if I do, that's not helpful: I don't know what "chapter 4" means. Instead, send me names of topics of interest.
Excellent Tutor. Highly recommend.
Andrew is a very good, patient tutor. He really works hard to ensure his student learns the subject and feels confident. He shows genuine interest in his students. He responds to email and is always available. He is flexible in his hours. We are so glad we found Andrew. He has been teaching Chemistry and Algebra to my daughter and is excellent in both subjects. I highly recommend Andrew.Priya, 127 lessons with Andrew
A very knowledgeable and patient tutor.
Andrew helped me review some of the units of organic chemistry as well as taught me how to spot things out. His tutoring style was great, if I didn't know something he eother prompted me or he told me to draw it out. I felt more confident with the mechanisms than I did when I took the class!Lauren, 3 lessons with Andrew
Andrew taught my daughter a (AP) chemistry concept she didn't understand for her first lesson. He allowed her to work through problems after walking her through them at first. This allowed her to grasp and understand what she was doing better than a simple "give the student the answer and move on" technique would've provided. He is a firm believer in understanding concepts thoroughly, and that is something my daughter and I appreciate greatly, as that is an important teaching quality.Kia, 1 lesson with Andrew
Great knowledgable tutor
Andrew tutored me for over a year and was great! He is patient when teaching new material and can explain topics in numerous ways. He has an extensive knowledge of General and Organic Chemistry, and helped me to increase my grades in those classes. He also tutored me in Physics and helped me to identify and understand the fundamental topics. I would recommend Andrew to tutor these subjects.Annalise, 32 lessons with Andrew
Andrew has not only helped my son dramatically improve his grades in chemistry, he has also instilled a real interest in the subject.Diane, 10 lessons with Andrew
Andrew is a wonderful tutor! He is patient and explains things in a very clear way. He allows you to reach answers yourself, but helps you along the way. He is also very responsible by email, should questions arise outside of a tutoring session. Andrew also was flexible, understanding, smart, and always prepared. Could not have made it through organic chemistry without him!Eileen, 11 lessons with Andrew
The best tutor I have ever had! Makes sure you understand the topic inside and out!
I had a great time learning from Andrew! He really knew all the little details and gave great clear explanations on how to solve the problems! He helped me acquire many helpful tips on how to solve my math problems! After an hour of listening to him, I was amazed by how quickly I started to do the problems!! I highly recommend this tutor for anyone who is having trouble in math! I will be contacting Andrew much more during the year to help me more with math! I'm so pleased and it was a pleasure working with him!Steven, 16 lessons with Andrew
Patient, consistent, and knowledgeable
I first started getting tutored by Andrew when I decided I needed to get a leg up on organic chemistry over the summer before I started the class in the fall. I had absolutely no background in organic chemistry aside from what concepts I had learned in college and high school general chemistry, and Andrew was very instrumental in helping me form a comprehensive understanding of the material and tackle any difficult problems I might encounter in my class. He was very patient and accessible when I had any questions or needed help outside of tutoring. All in all a great experience working with Andrew!Esha, 16 lessons with Andrew
Professional, Reliable, and Effective
My son has had difficulty grasping Math concepts during High School lectures which has created gaps in his learning and resulted in low test scores. After several meetings with Andrew, my son started to gain confidence and understanding of Algebra II and eventually scored an A on an exam. He is so comfortable with Andrew, that he will text him on his own to set up their meetings. Andrew is quick to respond, accommodating, and on time.Michelle, 44 lessons with Andrew
Great tutor, just what my son needed
Andrew is very knowledgeable in Chemistry and is helping my son study for the Chem AP exam. When my son has a question, Andrew knows the answer right away and is able to explain things in a way my son can understand.Jan, 11 lessons with Andrew
