About Andrew

I graduated from Pitzer College with a B.A. in chemistry and am currently pursuing my Ph.D. in organic chemistry at The Ohio State University. For my last two years in college, I tutored extensively in introductory and organic chemistry. I quickly became the most popular tutor because of my patience, dedication, and instructional ability. My emphasis was and still is on understanding the fundamental concepts as problem solving naturally follows. Teaching and drilling the “how” of problem solving mechanics are important, but really understanding the “why” that those problems are based on generates the greatest returns, especially for students interested in continuing in the natural sciences.

Furthermore, early tutoring sessions helped many of my students develop self-confidence in the face of seemingly overwhelming course requirements which helped in their overall performance. While not all of them got A’s, those that regularly attended tutoring did see improvements in their grades.

I believe that mathematics should not get in the way of learning the natural sciences, so I am capable of tutoring in that as well. My passion is in chemistry but the quantitative nature of the natural sciences means that I am fluent in algebra through calculus.

By nature of my coursework and extracurricular research, I also have extensive experience in lab work and spent a fair amount of my tutoring time assisting with lab coursework.

I look forward to tutoring for you!

If you've read this far, you're probably serious about wanting tutoring. However, my time is as valuable to me as your time is to you, so here are a few things that you may find helpful:

1. If sending me a message, please make sure to address me by name. Don't accidentally use some other tutor's name or use no name at all. If at the very least, that indicates you probably read my description.

2. I realize that most potential students are reaching out for tutoring because of a current and usually urgent need. However, to make sure that I can best help you, I'm going to respond to your request with questions about what your particular needs are. This may include a request for current specific issues as well as some background information on your desired topic. This helps me to figure out whether or not I am capable of meeting your needs. It is highly unlikely that I will be able to meet the same day of your request.

3. I will usually not agree to schedule a meeting until (2) is answered and I get a chance to talk to the potential student over the phone. The purpose of this is to begin establishing a "good fit" and rapport; I might be a great tutor and you might be a great student, but if we can't work and communicate well together, then it's not going to work out.

4. As a common courtesy, please respond to any of my replies, even if to indicate that you're no longer interesting in tutoring.

5. Avoid sending me requests for help with "chapter 4" or something similarly vague. I probably don't have your textbook and even if I do, that's not helpful: I don't know what "chapter 4" means. Instead, send me names of topics of interest.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Organic Chemistry

I took two semesters of organic chemistry and one semester of physical organic chemistry with an overall average of an A- grade. During my undergraduate junior and senior years, I was a designated tutor for my chemistry department in organic chemistry. The students who came in regularly and from the beginning saw the greatest gain. Learning organic chemistry, at large, requires a build up from the physicochemical properties of molecules and functional groups, to reactions and mechanisms, to synthesis. Thus, the better the understanding of the prior steps, the better the understanding of the following steps.

About half of my time was spent in helping students with their lab reports. I have refined my ability for lab work from my coursework and from three years of extracurricular chemistry research spent between inorganic synthesis of borane compounds and organic ligand synthesis.
