About Maria

I have been a journalist for more than 16 years and my specialty is in Macintosh and PC training, Graphic Design and print and web publishing, production. I have many years of expertise in software applications ranging from Adobe PhotoShop to Final Cut Pro. I am a very patient teacher. I understand that people want to learn and I try to not talk down to people. I have taught many, many people how to do a variety of different things and I often have people say, "Wow, where have you been hiding?" I am a good trainer for many reasons, but the main reason is because I speak 'geek' and I can translate it in ways that 'non-geek' people can understand. I can also recommend people who can do the work for someone, if it will take a lot of work for someone to learn what they want, which is sometimes the case. I, myself, have a great interest in learning and I try to keep up to date with new technology, new skills and software upgrades. I am fluent in Macintosh and PC and often can help make both of those talk to each other. I love teaching other people because I love sharing the knowledge and helping others see that they can do something with a patient teacher. I am also very adaptable and roll with changes well. I can guarantee that you will know any application better after training with me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe InDesign

I have been a graphic designer for more than 20 years and have been an expert user in InDesign ever since it was introduced. As a newspaper designer, I have used InDesign pretty extensively and on a daily basis to design most of my work as a graphic designer. While I was pursuing my Master's Degree in Visual Communication, I gave short lectures on techniques and tools to undergrads in my Advanced Design classes.

Adobe Photoshop

I have been a PhotoShop user for more than 16 years. I started with PhotoShop 1.0 and am still an advanced user today. I can teach you how to use layers, paths, levels, etc. I think the best way to teach students is through the tools and tutorials. That teaches you what the tools can do and then you can see what they do through the tutorials.

Computer Programming

I have been an expert in Macintosh usage since 1990. From 1999 to 2004, I was the Macintosh trainer and systems specialist, where I purchased Apple products for newsroom users, as well as completed new installs and updates. I also was the person who tested new Apple technology before we rolled it out to users on our network. I'm very good at troubleshooting computer issues and teaching others with patience.

Desktop Publishing

I have been a newspaper designer for more than 16 years. I have been an expert InDesign user since 1.0 came out. And I used it on an almost daily basis for more than 10 years. I have worked at several newspapers, including The Washington Post, where I not only designed pages every day, but I trained others and also was the Macintosh expert focusing on photo and graphics troubleshooting and production. My portfolio includes features pages, magazine design, news page design, redesigns, special sections and sports & business, so I have used about every tool in InDesign to do what I have needed to do.

General Computer

I worked on the HelpDesk at The Washington Post for five years, fixing computer problems and troubleshooting various issues. I specialized in Macintosh setup, installs and troubleshooting, but I also set pcs up for connecting them to an NT network and helped to fix basic computer problems. During this job, I also addressed VPN, networking, wireless, as well as installs and rolling out software upgrades and changes. I also worked in the training department at The Post and helped train people on basic computer use as well as different software. I have been a mac user since 1987 and train people on their computers all the time.

Graphic Design

I have been in the newspaper business for more than 16 years, working as a designer. I've also used Adobe Illustrator, Aldus Freehand and almost all the other graphics software that have ever been released. Years ago, I taught the daughter of a co-worker how to use Photoshop and FreeHand and how they worked together and she now has a thriving craft business and is on QVC all the time. The way I teach software starts with all the tools. I show you what all the tools are and how to use them. Then I show you how the tools and software work with other integrated applications like Photoshop and InDesign. Then we start to do exercises in the software that you specifically want to learn how to do. I've never had a complaint yet!

HTML

I have been a web designer for more than 10 years and have experience with HTML as well as CSS. I have worked as a web editor at two jobs and a web designer at two jobs, and I also do freelance web design on the side. I am very good at explaining complex technical jargon to people in English that they can understand.

Macintosh

I have used Macintosh Computers on an almost daily basis for more than 20 years. I have worked at several newspapers, including The Washington Post, where I was the Macintosh expert focusing on photo and graphics troubleshooting and production, as well as doing installations and troubleshooting. I was certified in Apple troubleshooting years ago.

Photography

I got my Master's in Visual Communication with a specialization in photography at Ohio University. I have worked in Visual Journalism for the past 20 years, as a photo editor, photographer and designer. I know what makes a good image and how to get your camera to work for you. I worked at The Washington Post for five years on the Photo Desk, with some of the best photojournalists in the world.

Video Production

I learned video production skills and how to use video production software while earning my Master's Degree in Visual Communication at Ohio University, where I also immersed myself in documentary production, audio editing and video production classes, as well as Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro and Audacity. I learned the software so well, I often helped troubleshoot other students' projects and fixed their problems. Most video editing software works the same, there are just subtle improvements and differences. I took a class to get certified in Final Cut back in 2001. I can easily tutor people in the basics of how to import video into the editor and how the tools work to edit, cut and export final projects.

Web Design

I have been a web designer for more than 10 years, and I have used almost all applications for one thing or another. I specialize in WordPress customization and user-friendly navigation and interfaces. I'm all about making a website look polished and professional, as well as easy to use and navigate.
